Business Insider recently compiled a list ranking the most and least “miserable” cities in the United States. (Somebody apparently had a lot of free time on their hands.) So how do you suppose the various states did? There was one clear winner in the losers’ column and that was… (drumroll please) … California.
Yes, the Golden State has the most miserable cities on the list, including ten of the top fifty most miserable. As my mother always said, do your best to excel at something. I suppose this counts. (CBS Sacramento)
California has the most miserable cities in the country, according to data compiled by Business Insider, and landed 10 cities in the list of 50 most miserable cities in the United States.
This region didnt have any cities ranked in the top 100, and only Yuba City (159st) came in the top 200.
Rocklin is considered one of the least miserable cities in the country, coming in at 910 on the list of 1,000. Recently, Money Magazine named Rocklin one of the Top 100 Places to Live.
You can see the entire list of 1,000 here in spreadsheet form to see where your city ranks.
They came up with this index by comparing a variety of factors including population shifts, employment rates, median income and average commuting time. In other words, there’s probably some magic mixed in with the science but surely this list has some value anyway. So what can it tell us? Let’s take a look.
While California nabbed ten of the top fifty spots for being miserable, New Jersey came in a close second with nine of them. (It was basically a tie because another New Jersey city came in at number 51, but if we’re sticking to the rules we shouldn’t count it.) With that sort of a start you might be tempted to think that the blue states are all the most miserable, but not really. There are red and purple states near the top as well. Here are the rest of the states that made the top fifty and how many cities each had.
– Texas and Florida have five
– Ohio has four
– Michigan and Indiana have three
– Georgia has two
– Arkansas, Virginia, West Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Illinois have one
Part of it is a factor of population, at least to a point. California has the greatest number of miserable cities because California has the most cities. Texas and Florida are big also. But do you notice one state that doesn’t have a single city in the top fifty but has a massive population? New York. I know, right?
In other words, I’m kind of throwing up my hands here. There doesn’t seem to be any definitive rhyme or reason. It’s mostly just a fun chance to dunk on California, I suppose. Look over the list and see if you can make heads or tails of it.

The
Business Insider list looked into population change, the percentage of people with jobs, median household incomes, median commute times, the number of people living in poverty, and the percentage of people without health insurance.
Overall, Gary, Indiana ranked first, followed by Port Arthur, Texas and Detroit, Michigan.
California’s most miserable city is Huntington Park (10). Other cities in the top 50:
- Bell Gardens (14)
- Lynwood (21)
- El Monte (22)
- Palmdale (36)
- Montebello (40)
- Compton (41)
- San Bernardino (42)
- Lancaster (50)
The full list ranks the top 1,000 cities based on Census data (note the list starts at line three; therefore the numbers on the left are off by two).
Local cities:
- Yuba City (159)
- Stockton (230)
- Modesto (324)
- Ceres (398)
- Citrus Heights (404)
- Lodi (445)
- Davis (454)
- Turlock (468)
- Tracy (472)
- Sacramento (497)
- Woodland (578)
- Lincoln (603)
- Vacaville (605)
- West Sacramento (623)
- Fairfield (640)
- Rancho Cordova (742)
- Manteca (780)
- Elk Grove (785)
- Folsom (852)
- Roseville (872)
- Rocklin (910)

CRITERIA TO BE A MISERABLE CITY:
https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/la-cities-on-list-americas-most-miserable-562358601.html
Business Insider said it used U.S. Census data to analyze 1,000 U.S. cities on criteria such as crime, drug addiction, population changes, job opportunities, commute times, household incomes, abandoned homes and effects from problems such as natural disasters.
Cities on the list shared qualities, including few opportunities, devastation from natural disasters, high crime and addiction rates, and often many abandoned houses.

These sorts of lists can be entertaining, but , it all depends on the criteria being used .
Also, if you are looking for jobs and/or places to live, you personally might very well find a great job and a very nice home in some of the miserable places.

My state, FL, has a tumor, it’s called Dade county (Broward is a close 2nd). Most of FL cities on the list are in that county.
Miami is like the 5th in the US for crime. Hmm, Miami hasn’t had an R mayor in >50yrs.

Agreed. This is a bizarre list.
Most Miserable US Cities Data (Source: US Census Bureau)
Los Angeles "typhoid city" is ranked 187 and not in top 10 (let alone top 50)?
Better yet, San Francisco "fecal matter city" is ranked 748?
Chicago "murder city" is ranked outside top 50 worst, at 78?

Because parts of L.A. and San Francisco are still great places to live - if you can afford to isolate yourself from the element.
There is a pretty clear dark to light spectrum on the California list.

It’s odd, how CA is THE worst state, but FL gets THE most crap from movies and stuff. FL always gets criticized/ridiculed in movies and shows. But I never see anything about CA.
Examples:
The Mick: one sibling ties the youngest to a bed because she doesn’t want to watch him. The other sibling says, what is this Florida?
The Detour: about a chaotic family’s life. On there way to FL, they get stuck in traffic blocked by rednecks trying to put their t-tops on in the rain. The man has an arrow in his chest. The main character says what is it with FL.
I could go on and on. FL is like the butt of jokes in movies and shows.

Yep, S.F. and L.A. are buoyed in this ranking by high incomes, low rates of abandoned homes, etc.

Everytime I see these stories about this Tarnished Godless hellhole, I think of that stupid commercial the girly man made.
We’re Number 1!!, it should be re-edited to show how we are #1 in , Homeless, Poverty, Welfare, Crime, Illegal Aliens, with The Girly Man smiling and saying We’re Number One.
