I posted the whole thing, but DO go back to the source link to get the formatting, which was too complicated for me to approximate.

Bottom line: legislation proposes lifting the statute of limitations for NO kind of child sex abuse involving youth organizations, public schools, counselors, pediatricians and other healthworkers, athletic programs, parks &rec, coaches, mentors, public institutions, nonprofits and general youth programs, fostercare, juvenile justice facilities and detention, or any other context --- EXCEPT for churches.

"The Big Idea: This USA Today report hides or, at best, obscures the fact that Catholic leaders do not oppose sexual-abuse laws that apply to public institutions and nonprofits, as well as to churches and other religious bodies. The church opposes laws that single out religious groups."

That's it.

I put it in "News" rather than "Religion Forum" because that's exactly the point: a law that ignores 90% of the problem and proposes lifting the statute of limitations ONLY when religious institutions are involved --- do you pronounce that "prosecution" or "persecution"?

And media malpractice pervades it all.

Cue the Freepers who will ignore the content of the post and focus on the Church, thereby mimicking the gerbilists at USA Today.

Once I see anything connected to Dollar Bill Donohue, I move on.

The opening sentence or paragraph of a news article, summarizing the most important aspects of the story.

Gerbilists bury the lede deep down in the story when they find it inconvenient towards their narrative. Most people don’t dig that far down. That’s one of the ways the left is able to shape what people think they know.

A lede (pronounced LEED) is the essential gist of a news story --- quickly establishing Who, What, When, and Why should I care-- which is supposed to be in introductory section of the article, "leading" into the rest of the story.

So to "bury the lede" refers to hiding the most important and relevant pieces of a story within other distracting information.

Like writing a story about the Ukraine thing and not mentioning the word "Biden" until continued on page 13, paragraph 27.

P.S. I think the journos spell it "lede" so it doesn't get spelled "lead" ("led") and pronounced like "dropped like a lead balloon."

Maybe if you read the article you’d see why he was quoted, and what’s really going on. That is, assuming you wanted to know.

The schools, juvenile detention system (law enforcement in general to get to brass tacks), child psychology profession, and pediatricians have always attracted pedophiles.

They go to where they have access to children. Requirement of a four year or even a ten year degree is no detriment at all.

That’s all nice and good, but when is Rome going to deal with the homosexual problem within its priesthood and seemingly corresponding sexual abuse problems it seems to continue to try and hide?

Dictionary.com says that printers changed “lead” to “lede” to make it clear that notes about “the lede” weren’t mistaken for part of the text to be printed. Who knew?

Maybe it will be a Jeopardy question.

A lot of Catholics are asking that question. It's depressing that just one --- ONE! ---U.S. Catholic bishop ---an out-in-the-boondocks guy named Bishop Strickland in Tyler, TX --- spoke up at the USCCB and said the Church in the US needed independent expert laity-led bodies, including people with professional training and experience as investigators and prosecutors --- to deal with "allegations" implicating both priests and bishops.

The USCCB basically bristled at any suggestion of lay oversight over bishops.

Utterly disgusting, maddening, disheartening. This is a problem which is not going away.

This article's main point, though, was valid. It's not just church(es). It's every organization, private or public, professional, nonprofit, whatever --- that deals with minors. Nobody has yet dealt with Charol Shankshaft's research finding that 90% of the serious abuse (rape, not just "unwelcome hugs") happens in the public schools.

So why does washable mean unwashable?

Why does flammable mean the same as inflammable?

Why do you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway?

Does boned mean boned or unboned? Either way? Vice-versa?

The English language is so cockeyed.

I'd expect more from a religious organization than government schools.

But as so often happens on this issue Roman Catholics always try to deflect by saying "it's worse somewhere else."

Why does “lead” mean “conduct in a forward direction” and also “the element the Romans called Plumbum”?

In the spirit of your sets of opposites ... why does “cleave” mean “bond together” and “violently split apart”? ... English got the way it is because of a history of both conquering and being conquered. Romans conquered Western Europe. Scandinavians conquered England and parts of France. Latinized Scandinavians ... my amigos the Normans ... conquered England. England did the Industrial Revolution every which where.

It’s possible that there are language of the Indian subcontinent or of China that have a similar history, but I don’t know enough about them to say.

I think it's far worse for the Catholic Church, because every one of our bishops knows better, has been given the grace to do better, has had more experience to understand better, and yet---- they are visibly failing the flock they are supposed to be leading. They seem intransigently stuck in a stance of "keep your head down and maybe it'll all blow over."

A "double standard" here ---- measuring them by a mor exacting measure --- is perfectly justified. We are right to expect more from them, and the failure to see that "more" in them is devastating.

I’m not interested in anyone’s opinions on this subject unless they’re super advocates of chastity. The whole problem is the idea that God or the universe “owes you” the indulgence of your genital appetite.

I’m glad to see you say this. A number of your fellow RCs attempt to deflect away from the problem.
