A lot of Catholics are asking that question. It's depressing that just one --- ONE! ---U.S. Catholic bishop ---an out-in-the-boondocks guy named Bishop Strickland in Tyler, TX --- spoke up at the USCCB and said the Church in the US needed independent expert laity-led bodies, including people with professional training and experience as investigators and prosecutors --- to deal with "allegations" implicating both priests and bishops.

The USCCB basically bristled at any suggestion of lay oversight over bishops.

Utterly disgusting, maddening, disheartening. This is a problem which is not going away.

This article's main point, though, was valid. It's not just church(es). It's every organization, private or public, professional, nonprofit, whatever --- that deals with minors. Nobody has yet dealt with Charol Shankshaft's research finding that 90% of the serious abuse (rape, not just "unwelcome hugs") happens in the public schools.

I'd expect more from a religious organization than government schools.

But as so often happens on this issue Roman Catholics always try to deflect by saying "it's worse somewhere else."
