(CNN) The "Joker" hit movie theaters Friday despite a wave of criticism that it glorifies a killer and could encourage copycat attacks nationwide.
The movie featuring Joaquin Phoenix is about a marginalized clown that goes on a killing rampage. The story's told in a manner that seeks to evoke empathy without rooting for him, says CNN's Brian Lowry.

In a joint bulletin, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security warned law enforcement after online threats called for mass shootings at movie showings. The bulletin shared with police this week said while federal authorities had no information leading to specific or credible threats to particular venues, they had received tips of threats posted on social media since at least May.
In response, major cities beefed up security for the movie's opening night. The Los Angeles Police Department said it'd maintain a high presence at theaters and urged moviegoers to be vigilant and report anything unusual. Some theaters even banned costumes at the "Joker" premiere.

How come we don’t see anything like this when Antifa hits the streets?
“Even before its release, Warner Bros. faced protests from the families of mass shooting victims who feared it would lead to violence or copycat attacks”
I’m one of those deplorable dregs of society so maybe I am missing something here but half the shows on tv and a good chunk of movies revolve around murders.
A movie of violence just for violence sake. Wow, what a concept. Won’t be wasting my money on it.
But I haven't set foot in a theater in about 20 years and I certainly don't plan to make an exception for this one.
Same very thing happened when the ‘Sound of Music’ was released.
Some theaters these days have comfy seats and dinner shows, where you can order a meal for the movie. It is a really nice way to see a movie. Unfortunately, few movies are worth the price, even in a top notch venue.
I wasted my time on it and I would agree that some copycat murders are on the way because of it.
The plot dragged on and it was boring
It was totally predictable.
I could wait to get put of the theater.
I will not be buying the blu ray
The lefts greatest enemies are peace, love and harmony. They want, indeed require evil and injustice for their money machines.
Hey, maybe trump will unveil his secret gun control package with the next crisis. If it is so MAGA, why is he hiding it.
Heck, there is a cinema not far from me where you can literally sit on sofas and armchairs and watch a film. Its like being able to watch a film at home, except with a massive cinema screen and surround sound.
“I am missing something here but half the shows on tv and a good chunk of movies revolve around murders.”
You’re right about that. The most graphic and goriest violence shown on cable tv, and even the broadcast networks to a lesser extent, are likely more brutal than anything you’ll see in Joker. I think the difference might be that the movie “glorifies” violence. Not sure.
I knew a quiet guy in college who had begun to be bullied (verbally) by one of his big, loudmouth roommates (in a house). The victim told the bully that if he kept it up he (the victim) was going to bring his gun from back home and blow his (the bully's) effing brains out.
The bullying stopped ASAP.
I wonder if the studio is having people call to make these threats (from burner phones) to build up publicity for the movies? More people will see it because of the publicity in all the papers and news shows.
Of course my tax dollars help pay for the discs so Hollywood gets at least a bit of my hard earned money.
This movie sounds way too dark and cynical to be entertaining. Pass.
What are the chances this is just the studio drumming up publicity?
I remember when studios would advertise that a doctor or nurse would be on hand in case a horror movie was too intense for some members of the audience. I think that was done for The Blob, and maybe The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Maybe now they call in shooting threats on their own movies?
I was thinking the exact same thing. < /s>
If this whole affair isn't stark acknowledgement that Hollywood and its ultraviolent fare inspire, instigate and motivate mass-killers in the real world, something they have fiercely denied for decades, nothing does.
