Woman dies at 102, DirecTV charges early termination fee

Isabel Albright of San Lorenzo was among the oldest people in America - living through two world wars, 18 presidents and seven moon landings.

She was born before television came into being.

Yet, ironically, she didn't outlive her satellite TV contract. And that was a problem.

"Everything was fine until we went to disconnect and that's when all the surprises happened,'' said her son in law, John Manrique of Hayward.

Albright died last December at the remarkable age of 102. The family has been repairing the house for sale, sifting through boxes, closing up a life that spanned a whole century.

Which was why the last bill from DirecTV seemed so galling: Although she lived more than 100 years, Albright still received an "early termination fee'' from DirecTV.

102 ain’t early termination!!!

And not the best publicity (thought probably routine) for a company!! :)

I’m 51

Sometimes my heart beats 12 times in a row WITHOUT palpitating :)

I’m shooting for 57 and I can do it!! :)

The fee is invalid. Death terminates all debts. DirecTv’s lawyers and any collection agency can go fly a kite.

Just wait until she starts getting emails from Nancy Pelosi thanking her for her future vote and donations.

“Death terminates all debts.”

No, it does not. The debts of the deceased become claims against the estate of the deceased.

That said, almost all service contracts of this type cease upon the death of the person utilizing the service.

My grandmother lived to be one hundred and six, and according to her the government lied and she lived through zero moon landings.

(No flames, that is not _me_ saying this, that is her... :-) )

Start by simply not paying. If its on a card, report the card stolen.

Eh. That’s how contracts work. And no her heirs don’t owe it. It was just an autogenerated bill. At least they turned it off. Ma-bell just wouldn’t get the message when my grandmother died. Sent 3 copies of the death certificate, they just wouldn’t turn it off until it was in arrears enough for that turn off. Then they started hassling me.

You’re not responsible for anyone else’s debts. A dead person doesn’t have legal standing to enter into or to execute a contract.

The only thing Direct TV is good for is the Tennis Channel(when a slam is going on).

I do a lot of house/pet sitting, and during a slam, I’m ecstatic when I have a job with a client who has Direct TV.
