For about a month, the rocks were just a mystery. Two dozen boulders had popped up along a San Francisco sidewalk and even officials were stumped.
We dont know who put them in, but it wasnt the city, a councilman said.
By the time the rocks were hauled away Monday, theyd spawned days of headlines and split a community.
Local news outlets began to piece the story together last week: Weary of alleged drug dealing among homeless people camping out on their block, neighbors on the street of Clinton Park had pooled several thousand dollars to physically bar the way. To some, it was a creative tactic from desperate residents. For others, it was a declaration of hostility to the homeless a Band-Aid measure in a city where their plight has drawn national scrutiny and where shelters still cant meet demand. The homeless count in San Francisco jumped 17 percent from 2017 to this year as rents and real estate prices continue to skyrocket and as the Trump administration considers an intervention in California.
Opponents rolled the rocks into the street overnight; city workers put them back; people rolled them out again. Protesters gathered Sunday, while residents called a meeting and said they faced harassment.
By last weekend, the boulders were exposing just how high tensions are running amid a city homelessness crisis that years of policy proposals have done little to dent. Theyd become a symbol, said Danielle Baskin, a San Francisco artist who walks through Clinton Park on her way to work and whose Twitter account now identifies her as an Anti-Rock Agitator.

Huge Dobermans might be a better plan.
They look nice... should have cemented and rebarred them in place.
I left Seattle for my own acreage in Kentucky in 2008. This kind of nonsense is one of the reasons. Modern american cities are a problem. Even Louisville, KY.
The answer is to simply get out.
Maybe pigeon spikes
Louisville’s a cesspool. Wish Indiana would annex it.
That’s why all the young ladies who moved into downtown L.A. now have pit bulls as pets when they walk at nights.
Racist Rocks.
S#!TH@7e = SF
I heard that Bouncing Bettys worked well too.

I left Seattle in 2008 for flyover country in North Dakota.
Part of me misses Seattle, but the truth is I miss the memory of what Seattle used to be, not what it currently is. I couldn’t raise my kids there today. Instead they’re in a small town school with a bunch of farm kids, happy and safe.
Close the thread. Comment # 2 is the answer.
Unless you want to go with Pit Bulls, Rottweiler’s, or any other assorted aggressive breed.
The homeless and the city should be grateful for this non-violent protest and solution.
Dear voters;
When you vote for clowns.
Don’t be surprised your city becomes a circus.
The residents should refer to the boulders as art and dare the city to violate their free speech.
Apropos........................
I can’t imagine living in such an environment. The good people of California are in an impossible situation.
