Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) made an appearance on BET's new series "Young Gifted and Broke" to talk about the Democrats' plan to cancel all outstanding student loan debt. According to Omar, the system is stacked against immigrants and it's time for Wall Street to bail the American people out of debt.
"My family, we didn't really recover. We went through the private loan system. I didn't really know anything about it. That's my fault. People talk about financial literacy but they also prey on people like me," fellow panelist and author Michael Arceneux said.
"That's an important piece because a lot of people think we made bad choices but it's not about the bad choices we made. It's the system that's stacked up against you, right, when you're an immigrant, when you're the first to go to college in your family, when you're looking at having to pay your rents and all of these other things and the only actions you have is to take out more loans," Omar explained. "When a private college gives you a bigger opportunity at a better life, all of that is the enticement of a system that preys on you."
Rep. @IlhanMN on the need to forgive student loan debt like hers: A lot of people think we made bad choices and its not about the bad choices we made, its a system that stacked up against you, right, when youre an immigrant; its "a system that preys on you"
"Talk about some of the pillars of this legislation and how it would work," host Angela Rye said.
"As someone who's part of that generation, and I wanted to make sure that we were creating a proposal that would alleviate the kind of stress that people are dealing with, so what we're proposing is a simple cancelation of all debt, public and private," Omar explained. "So a simple cancellation of the $1.6 trillion. And the way that we will pay for it, you know, in the next 10 years, is to add a small financial transaction to speculators on Wall Street."
"We believe that we had the opportunity to bail out Wall Street and now Wall Street gets the opportunity to bail out the American people," Omar said with a smile. The audience applauded. "I think it's really important for a lot of people who are listening, who might think, 'Why would you want to cancel ALL of the student debt?' There might be some people who can pay it off. And I think, for us, we look at it as being the most simple and the equitable thing to do because this debt isn't a rich person problem, right? Trump and Trumps children are not benefiting from this cancellation. They don't carry student debt. Most of the people who carry student debt are the poor and the middle class."

Eff em.
waaaaaaaah
No, not "the American people" but rather a small fraction of people who made poor choices and now would like to avoid the consequences of their poor choices. Not buying it.
News flash people - not everyone needs to go to college, not everyone should go to college. We have a lot greater need for plumbers, electricians, truck drivers, etc. - people with real skills in a real trade - than we do for another graduate with a degree in 17th century French poetry, or a BA in "feminist studies."
I lived like a hobo while in college at U of Idaho to keep costs down. Covered my expenses with summer jobs and AFROTC scholarship. Took a real major, Civil Engineering. Graduated with no debt. I thoroughly resent people living high in college, taking ethnic studies, and then walking away from the expense, which is then handed to the taxpayer.
If you’re going to do this hare-brained scheme, at least, target those who really benefited from it. Pay for the $1.6 trillion in debt by taking it from the universities’ endowments.
How come no one ever points to the colleges? Every time loans are guaranteed, Pell grants increased, work study grants increased what do the colleges do?? Raise tuition and raise it above the govt benefits. I am a loyal graduate of Fordham yet there was no way ten years ago that I was going to pay 52K for my daughter to go there. And now it’s 67K.
And who decides whose loan gets zeroed. How is it going to be fair, to use the progs favorite word, for a person to have their 25K loan forgiven after having gone to SUNY Oswego , 9500 a year and then forgive the person with 200K loan having gone to NYU 70K.? And the kid from NYU has a helluva lot more career entree than the kid from Oswego.
Gifted. Legends in their own minds.
Cry me a river.
At times, what a stunning looking woman.
Sadly, more often than not her interior just wreaks.
She has a vile twisted mind. She is a great example of why we MUST do a better job of vetting immigrants.
She should have been sent back already.
Stamp this one, “Return to sender...”
You nailed her with that, D1.
She’s one of the most vile ugly women on the inside I’ve seen.
When she slandered Elliot Abrams in that House hearing she was gleeful and had that smirking grin the whole time.
She is a hateful, sorry excuse of a woman.
Buying her way out of her crimes - like Quid Pro Joe - it’s the American way.
If they are so gifted, they can, wait for it—learn to code online. Without having to go into debt or be broke.
apparently she doesn’t understand ‘wall street’. It’s the middle class, the smart poor, the firemen’s funds, the police funds, the civil service funds the union funds and every other pension and retirement fund and employee benefit fund out there that invests in ‘wall street’.
And we don’t want to hear it from immigrants or anyone else that they are burdened with a ‘private college’ tuition or professional student debt. In a free society, people are responsible for their own actions and their own decisions. Immigrants are given money to come here, educational grants advantages, more loan advantages and employment advantages - more than Americans are entitled to. So pay the damned debt and go cry in your beer that exploitation of the system caught up with you and the money tree has no more leaves.
Agreed. My parents skimped and saved and I worked through my undergraduate degree. Then I did my next two degrees as night school while working full time. I came out with each degree with no debt - because I made good choices, worked for it, and took my time. It wasn’t handed to me overnight.
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.
Illegals get free tuition. How is that oppressive?
Revoke her illegally obtained citizenship.
Send her back.
Stop ALL immigration until ALL illegal aliens are removed.
send her home now! we don’t need this kind of lying, divisive, anti=American sheit in USA
You lie, Ilhan Omar. Have a friend whose son married an illegal alien in California who went to San Diego State. She earned her Master’s Degree paid for by taxpayers of the State of California and she now works as a counselor in the California public schools. Tell me another lie. The media is not doing its job of reporting what is actually going on at all.
