CDC Confirms That the Vast Majority of Vaping-Related Lung Disease Cases Involve THC Products
Reason ^ | September 27, 2019 | Jacob Sollum

Today the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finally confirmed that the vast majority of patients with vaping-related respiratory illnesses have reported using cannabis products, typically purchased on the black market. Among 514 patients for whom the information was available, the CDC found, 77 percent reported using THC products. Just 16 percent said they had vaped only nicotine, although the types, sources, and brands of the products were not identified.

Since people may be reluctant to admit illegal drug use, the true rate of THC vaping among the patients with respiratory symptoms is almost certainly higher. Prior data from several states indicated that 83 percent to 100 percent of patients reported that they had vaped THC.

Another CDC study, based on interviews with 86 patients in Wisconsin and Illinois, found that 87 percent "reported using e-cigarette products containing THC." Two-thirds of the THC vapers said they used cartridges "sold under the brand name Dank Vapes," one of several "largely counterfeit brands with common packaging that is easily available online and that is used by distributors to market THC-containing cartridges with no obvious centralized production or distribution."

In light of this information, the main thrust of which has been apparent for at least a month, it is harder than ever to justify the insinuation that legal e-cigarettes are to blame for the lung disease outbreak, which involves 805 cases and 12 deaths by the CDC's latest count. While 16 percent of the patients in the CDC's study of 514 cases said they vaped only nicotine, those self-reports may not be reliable given the sensitivity of the subject. In any case, there is no indication so far that any of the patients were using legal e-cigarettes, as opposed to black-market pods or e-liquids, which may pose special hazards.

Did the vaping industry fail to pay off politicians or something?

Personally, as a non-smoker, I prefer the second-hand aroma of tobacco vs the second-hand fruity vaping stench. But I'd much rather prefer the federal govt stay out of this entirely.

And how many those dopers were abusing other drugs and/or alcohol? My bet is a high percent of them and that would certainly affect their health.

The government needs to stop telling us what we can and can’t do, and we need to stop conforming when they do.

We are not their subjects at all.

I don’t vape. It makes sense to me that inhaling a vaporized oil into your lungs could potentially have bad results. Vaping should not be banned, vaping companies should not be terrified. This is ridiculous.

“Nobody’s died from cannabis.”

Agreed, although likely you were being “/S-tic”

But, some have died or been harmed from additives mixed in with cannabis—like insecticides or oils. That appears to be the case here. Cartridges containing extracted or synthetic THC mixed with who knows what seem to be the problem.

Vape the pot you grow in your closet... be safe, live long, and prosper.

Who knew? They’d legalize pot, take away the stigma, mass produce it, chemical it up and it’d kill ya’. I just didn’t expect that they’d come up with something so bad, it’d kill ya in 6 weeks.

The government is pushing pot, so we will not hear about the bad effects of smoking pot. The gov criminalizes cigarettes and vaping. Complete hypocricy.

Are you kidding....The governemtn is now collecting money on cigarettes, patches, gum, e-cigarettes...and pretty soon we'll be adding marijuana to the list of goodies.

The government should have stopped at cigarettes.

I wonder how many people have vaping-related lung disease and do not even realize it?

All three—tobacco, vaping, and pot should be illegal. Vaping is the over-night new industry that was originally to help people quit smoking—a transition tool. Yet, because it wasn’t regulated, nor tested, or anything—the Wild West—we now have a new, unregulated, and increasingly recognized dangerous industry. That is marketing to kids, picking up where tobacco left off. We are stupidly repeating the same cycle, most places are already no-vaping, advertising being banned, regulation pending, and banning in the future. Just save us all money and do the last now.

Nobody’s died from cannabis.

Except through car accidents and other negligent deaths due to losers high on pot and through THC-related deaths from lung cancer.

Potheads lie as much as Democrats.

The THC problem was reported by reliable local news sources from the very beginning. We knew, then the CDC admitted it. But the fake news kept pitching it as vaping-related. They are f’ing liars.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a lot of these vape shops are small businesses that have popped up and are making a lot of money. Big Tobacco would rather have them all crushed so that you can only vape with Juul made vape juice, and then Washington can get money out of them through an updated Tobacco Master settlement.

BS. Vaping drain cleaner is dangerous, same with drinking drain cleaner. The pertinent question is whether vaping the commercial products is dangerous. Show me the data.

The vaping device is just a delivery system. It is neither good or bad. It is similar in function to an inhaler used by asthma patients. The device is roughly as efficient at getting the substance being vaped into the blood stream as a syringe. I suppose there are those here who do not believe that the companies who produce the drugs being injected by syringe should be regulated either and that anyone should be able to import, market and sell any untested 3rd world produced chemical that they want for use in syringes.

If you believe that chemical substances sold that are meant to be vaped should not have any regulation then it is hypocritical for you to insist that the government should regulate substances sold that are intended to be injected. This position is of course very naive in today’s world. And we are currently seeing the results. People are vaping untested, unregulated, substances that completely unqualified people are producing and selling. These products go straight into the blood stream of users through the lung blood interface. If course a few people are going to die... what else should anyone expect? But tracking down which products are responsible will not always be easy, and as soon as one fly by night vaping chemical supply operation is put out out of business another will pop up to take its place... like a game of whack-a-mole.

I am a little shocked at the positions taken here by those who think the government should do nothing to regulate unknown substances being used in the hottest new craze in drug delivery systems. Right now there is no reliable way to know what type of dosage one is even getting of a basically unknown mixture of chemical compounds. It is basically crazy.
