Stephen Holden Doane (October 13, 1947 – March 25, 1969) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War.

Doane joined the Army from Albany, New York in 1967, and went through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. By March 25, 1969 was serving as a first lieutenant in Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During a firefight on that day, in Hau Nghia Province, Republic of Vietnam, Doane destroyed an enemy bunker by carrying an activated hand grenade into it, sacrificing himself to take out the hostile position.

Doane, aged 21 at his death, was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. First Lt. Doane was serving as a platoon leader when his company, engaged in a tactical operation, abruptly contacted an enemy force concealed in protected bunkers and trenches. Three of the leading soldiers were pinned down by enemy crossfire. One was seriously wounded. After efforts of 1 platoon to rescue these men had failed, it became obvious that only a small group could successfully move close enough to destroy the enemy position and rescue or relieve the trapped soldiers, 1st Lt. Doane, although fully aware of the danger of such an action, crawled to the nearest enemy bunker and silenced it. He was wounded but continued to advance to a second enemy bunker. As he prepared to throw a grenade, he was again wounded. Undaunted, he deliberately pulled the pin on the grenade and lunged with it into the enemy bunker, destroying this final obstacle. 1st Lt. Doane's supreme act enabled his company to rescue the trapped men without further casualties. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by this officer were an inspiration to his men and are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Did you have to keep Gizmo on the leash again or was he a good boy?

Yep, comes on at 9pm and midnight our time - Central - my.

Josh chases hurricanes - the bigger, the better. Last week’s episode was when he went to FL when Hurricane Michael hit and he was smack in the middle of it. Even stood outside a few minutes in the eyewall. My kinda guy! LOL

I’m watching it on the computer from the Science Channel through our Dish network. That way I can watch it when I want to. Or re-watch it. Works for cable companies, too.

Glad you only got a bit of all that rain, MY. 40 inches is WAY too much.

These shows just get you pumped up to do it yourself. LOL! I guess if we hear of a bad tornado, etc, there in your area, we’ll know you’re out in it. :)

Yes, it can be watched online and that comes in handy when a show slips by and I miss it. I forgot it was on tonight and missed the first airing at 9:00 but caught it when it aired again at midnight. If Kathy hadn’t reminded me, I’d have had to watch it online later. LOL

I feel for the folks who were hit by the 40 inches of rain. WAY too much. Glad that didn’t hit your area, my!

((LOL))Well, there was a family out on the boat dock with the dad fishing in the area by the gate so yes I did have to keep Gizmo on the leash but past the gate we did some walking around and had a great time.

It did start sprinkling some so when we got back to the parking lot they left and we hung out around the boat pier and ramp. Gizmo did a little bit of hide and seek. It was fun to watch.

They sure do get me pumped up. LOL I’ve been through a couple but they were Cat 1s ..... and yes, I was outside. :-)

I was outside when the first tornado hit our place in 2011, but not by choice. It chased me home and I just made it to the carport when it hit. Was out of the car but hadn’t made it to the door to get inside. I was lucky the wind was out of the west and I was on the east side of the house. That was INTENSE!

Nope, not hard to find but I don’t have the freedom to travel to chase them.
Opal, Katrina, and Rita were all still Cat 1s when they blew over us here though. And Hugo was a Cat 1 when it blew over Raleigh when I lived there.
I can’t remember the name of the one that hit Camp Lejeune when I lived there but it was the first one for me. I was terrified before it reached us but once it was there, I was outside running around in it. LOL

At least he didn’t have to stay on the leash the whole time. It sounds like you two has a good time, even if it did rain a little.

I can see you chasing them. With your hair blowing in the wind. Of course, in reality, you’d probably put it up out of the way.

Well, it’s not early any more, but I’d better head out. You know what Peaches is doing. He has his back feet up against my feet as I sit on the bed. He’s such a good kitty. But...he will be inside so we’ll see what happens.

Oooo...more thunder. Sorry, I’m not trying to rub it in. I’m just excited. it’s been a long dry spell. Hope you get your turn soon.

Nighty night!

My niece's homes were surrounded by water in New Caney. One close to evacuation orders. She and her hubby have a german shepherd kennel. Ashlie got 2 of her dogs from her sister's kennel.

Overhead...
