Never before has a boon to public health been met with such hysteria and ingratitude.
Vaping is almost all upside in comparison with traditional smoking, a wanton destroyer of health and lives, and yet the nation is in the grip of a panic about e-cigarettes.
In a rarity for the Trump era, the anti-vaping sentiment jumps traditional geographic and political bounds, running from the Oval Office to San Francisco, from President Donald Trump to his most fervent enemies.
Trump announced a Food and Drug Administration ban on flavored e-cigarettes last week, while not too long ago the San Francisco Board of Supervisors banned the sale of vaping products at retail outlets and seemingly more persnickety about this than, say, the use of heroin or public defecation prohibited their delivery to addresses in the city.

Do nothing but? Yeah we'd be better off if people didn't buy those products, no demand no supply.
OTOH, I know several people who have been able to use vaping to drastically reduce or eliminate their smoking tobacco, and taper off their nicotine consumption.
Sidebar - that annoying cloud of vapor is visual feedback that the unit is working, it helps regulate the dose, and gives a sense of doing something when someone has gotten to the zero nicotine level, but still hasn't quite quite quit going through the motions.
This is supposed to discourage smoking?
The transition to "real" cigarettes from vaping would be seamless!
What we have here is a situation where millions of people are making themselves into lab rats, vaping substances where no one really knows what the consequences will be. There likely are many who use this technology to help themselves give up cigarettes but they are the exception not the rule. Most are like my sister-in-law who suck on both all day long... cigarettes for the nicotine and the vaping device for THC at least in this liberal enclave.
I was just thinking as we were buying cigarettes for her at grocery and drugstores, that one would think that reputable retailers would not sell something that they know does nothing beneficial and causes death and disease for most of the people who use them. But “reputable retailers” are also the exception and not the rule these days.
We used to have liquor stores in this state and now they sell hard liquor in every grocery store and just about every other type retail outlets as well. The liquor stores had a bit of security and people under 21 could not go in.
I was at the self checkout at the Fred Meyers store near our house. Kids set off the alarm as they ran out of the store with their arms full of booze. The alarm went off automatically after about 5 seconds. The clerks didn't even pause the conversation they were having about how they don't get paid enough. I asked if they were going to do anything. They said that was against store policy. I asked if they were going to call the police. They said the police didn't like to be called because it happens so much. I asked if maybe the booze aisle should be located further from the door. They said they didn't want the kids knocking down other customers as they ran through the store with their I'll gotten gain.
So the store is teaching young people how easy it is to get away with criminal activity and supplying them with alcohol. I call that irresponsible. I gave one of the managers hell about it. It was like talking to a stone wall. But since that time they have moved the booze aisle further from the door, obviously because they were losing so much merchandise and not because they give a rats ass. And maybe I am not the only one who complained.
We have that situation every time an new drug gets FDA approval.
The approval process uses a small "representative" sample. Rare, and sometimes even fairly common, side effects (and interactions with other medicines and even foodstuffs) only become noticeable in a larger sample.
That quibble being said, you claimed: There is no good reason for products that do nothing but wreck people's lives to be on store shelves.
Getting many people off cigarettes, and off nicotine isn't 'doing nothing'.
My kid has quit smoking, and is now at the lowest available nicotine concentration, which he often cuts further with zero nicotine fluid. You may think his life and health are nothing, but I assure you, I think they are, and so does he.
Perhaps you think that it does "nothing but wreck people's lives".
You are wrong.
A few people each year are killed because of seat belts, whether incorrectly worn, not on the hip bones, and causing internal injuries, or preventing them from being thrown clear (usually a fatal event in an accident) before the car goes over a cliff, or a vanishingly small number of other misadventures. Do you think this means seat belts should be banned?
Are you willing to trade these few lives for the tens of thousands saved by seat belts every year?
From your screen name I 'm guessing you are a fireman. How many fatalities have you personally seen from cigarette caused fires? How many from vape caused fires?
I actually do not have a dog or pony in this freak show. Cigarettes are obviously worse than vaping devices in almost every measurable way except that we do not know what totally untested substances being vaped are doing to the bodies and minds of millions of new customers. The vaping device itself is obviously almost completely harmless. It is the witches brew of crap people are being sold to put in them that might or might not be harmful depending on what it is.
It makes one chuckle when people have no problem when the government shuts down and seizes all the assets of farmers selling unprocessed milk. But the same people are against any regulation on chemical compounds being sold for people to inhale through a delivery system that goes almost directly into the users blood stream. Why don’t we have preloaded syringes for sale at any place that wants to sell them. Other than a slightly increased risk of infection from users who do not properly clean the injection site... it is the same thing. And millions of diabetics have demonstrated that not that many get infections.

I'll be darned. We are on the same page.
I'm not against regulation to insure accurate dosing, and freedom from dangerous adulterants. I am against an outright ban of a less dangerous alternative to a substance that kills nearly half a million Americans a year.
Banning every flavor except menthol and tobacco(!) is absurd on the face of it!
Why dont we have preloaded syringes for sale at any place that wants to sell them.
As a diabetic, I have Rxs for two types of preloaded syringes. No problems so far...
Are you OK with turning kids into addicts?
I am certain that you realize that I was trying to make reference to this even if my post was not well composed. The chemical compounds being provided for vaping get into the bloodstream just about as quickly as if they were injected and currently have little or no regulation regarding their content. I agree that the vaping device itself is merely a delivery device and is neither good nor bad. There are studies that show that preloaded syringes and “pens” have a better safety record when used by diabetic patients than those which the patients load themselves. I do not believe that the companies that provide substances for vaping have their customer's safety in mind at this time. Maybe with all of the attention they are currently getting this will change,
Me? No.
I mean a liberal would think, 'Oh, the needle exchange program isn't working as intended, we need to provide these poor, poor victim addicts with preloaded pens and clean needles to insure a safe dose of clean poison uh, street pharmaceuticals...'
Juul seems to care a bit, they've been campaigning to limit sales of Juul products to minors, and I'm given to understand that the Juul cartridges are designed to be difficult to refill with God knows what.
In that vein the New Mexico health department last week was bragging, yes bragging that in 2018 they had handed out 9.8 million clean syringes in a state of only 2 million people. Is that a claim to fame or what ?
Bingo.
The only modern known deaths by nicotine poisoning have involved pesticides containing nicotine. There have been a couple recorded incidents of nicotine intoxication by people who have drank the straight solution (5-10ml of 24mg or greater nicotine solution.) NIH estimates that the required ingestion would have to be in excess of 3000mg to reach poisonous levels - for say the solution in JUUL pods, that would mean drinking the straight solution from more than 120 pods.
I buy 100ml bottles of a high nicotine solution per prescription for migraines, I'd have to drink 1.2 bottles of it to reach toxic levels and I guarantee I'd be vomiting with just a tiny portion of that amount. Those bottles last me about 4 weeks.
Apparently the investigators think that the culprit is a carrier oil used by 3rd party vape makers. I’ve heard that it could be vitamin E oil. Or it could be the Diacetyl as you have mentioned.
Reports are that the people getting sick aren’t always being real cooperative with the investigators, so who knows what they are using.
I guess if you’re gonna vape, buy straight from the big brand name makers.

No, I believe needle exchange programs for drug addicts are an abomination.

She doesn’t have cancer. If you aren’t going to read what I’ve written accurately, please don’t bother to answer me.
Extreme COPD (Chronic pulmonery obstructive disease) makes it so difficult for a patient to breathe they burn more calories breathing than they can take in. Scientific fact. Please be my guest and verify that on the web.
Believe what you want. It aint from vaping.
Me too, but the liberals love ‘em...
