The rise of killer robots is now unstoppable and a new digital Geneva Convention is essential to protect the world from the growing threat they pose, according to the President of the worlds biggest technology company.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, said the use of 'lethal autonomous weapon systems' poses a host of new ethical questions which need to be considered by governments as a matter of urgency.
He said the rapidly advancing technology, in which flying, swimming or walking drones can be equipped with lethal weapons systems missiles, bombs or guns which could be programmed to operate entirely or partially autonomously, "ultimately will spread to many countries".
The US, China, Israel, South Korea, Russia and the UK are all developing weapon systems with a significant degree of autonomy in the critical functions of selecting and attacking targets.
The technology is a growing focus for many militaries because replacing troops with machines can make the decision to go to war easier.

Realists know such a treaty only binds honest nations.
The US must be first, and we must be best.
It’s a more nightmarish version of the battleship and nuke arms races.
Because anyone can do it.
The Geneva Convention does not represent international law. Countries must mutually agree to it for it to apply.
It never occurs to Big Tech types to STOP developing AI though they worry it will kill us or oppress us. Their solution is always more tech or putting them in charge.
SkyNet is less than one generation away..... just sayin’
Just thinking about an armed drone with a video link and a game controller. Thats not a robot but who doubts that it will evolve to one over time.
Not me.
But treaties and conventions are not the answer. I suggest that AK-47s will be the peoples choice.
Level 4+ automation is still elusive; many of the sensors fail under different WX conditions.
Right now Russia has the lead in land based drones the sort needed to take and hold ground. US may have the lead in air drones, but China?
Google is developing China’s AI.
Of course Microsoft has a solution to the threat
Its called the Windows 23 operating system
AK-47s are replaced with AK-74Ms also need supply of armor piercing rounds.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-74
Saiga 12 might work better on flying targets!
;^)
The technology will advance no matter what. Don't you think it's best that the US leads?
Thanks. Interesting. Race to armeggedon?
If a m*slim programs a robot to blow itself up killing infidels, does the robot get 72 virgin robots in robot heaven?
Absolutely correct.
Hmm... What would MS do if the autonomous weapons systems refused the mandatory MS update?
