A call-center scammer has lost his appeal to overturn a $9m fine after a court pointed out the crook had specifically waived the right to appeal when he pleaded guilty.
Viraj Patel was part of a large India-based criminal enterprise that conned tens of thousands of Americans out of hundreds of millions of dollars: the swindlers would cold-call citizens and pose as US government officials demanding payment for unpaid taxes.
But, it turns out that he wasnt listening very carefully to either his lawyers or the federal district judge who sentenced him in Texas, because Patel was seemingly convinced he was only going to have to pay $250,000. When he realized the real fine was actually $9m, he tried to undo his guilty plea, and appealed to the Fifth Circuit claiming a miscarriage of justice.

Hope they put a phone in his cell—incoming calls only—publish the number so we can call him 24/7!
So this Indian scammer was actually physically in the U.S.? I didnt think any of them were that dumb.
I hope he is part of Mike Lees Green Card giveaway and they put him in Utah!
He and all of them really need prison!
I got a cellphone call yesterday with a new trick.
The caller ID was ‘NW Med Center’.
Thinking it was an area medical clinic calling, I did answer. The robocaller began a spiel about a car warranty.
{Click} Now that number is blocked by Call Detector.
I got several “call back to avoid legal action” calls last week.
I knew of some people that did this out of Israel and Russia MANY years ago.
You’d be surprised how little the grunts (actual callers) get.
I hope he is part of Mike Lees Green Card giveaway and they put him in Utah!
He ...conned tens of thousands of Americans out of hundreds of millions of dollars... and wants the court to show mercy?!
He should be facing more than fines, he should be in prison for the rest of his life - and every $.01 he has should be forfeited.
They are big on phone spoofing. The Medicare scam here says they are BCBS.
Patel ? He should’ve gone into the motel business instead.
I hope this Patel is an American Citizen. If he is Indian and hasn’t surrendered his passport he’ll be over the border at Tijuana and on a plane to him homeland pronto.
Isn't that how the scammers do it?
They ask you an innocuous question to get you to say "Yes" . Then they insert the recording of your "Yes" wherever they want to make it look like you agreed to their pitch.
