I’m in the Saginaw Bay area.
April this year had 1 Oriole and 2 buntings at my feeders. Then the usual birds took over.
Now, goldfinches are loading up on nijer seed (NOTE: that sentence -goldfinch & nijer- may be determined to be anti-semetic AND racist!). Hummingbirds were VERY busy last week and likely will be gone soon.
Like you, I’m laying out suet for everyone; the Piliated love my yard in winter.
I’ll be out this week using my SEMI-AUTOMATIC, MULTIPLE-SHOT “ASSAULT” SHOTGUN to mass-harvest evil Canada Goose...cuz I’m a Murrikan! For smoking.
Just like my youth in the 60s and 70s.
Maybe they’re just ignoring the census.
They are not "singing"
They are letting all other comers know this is "their" space and to keep away.
years ago i did a study. (1982)
Record for a few hours, then play it back.
They would explore the source of the sound, then go away.
Took about a week to come back after no more recording playback.
Let me know how it works for you!
usually comes down for a few hours of mischief daily.
He was a fall out of nest rescue.
He is actually quite entertaining.
Flies top cover for the chickens, calling alarm for hawks and swooping on the hawks with his siblings. Occasionally he swoops a chicken and taps them with his foot as he glides by (coup?, lol)
Unlike the other crows, really enjoys flying for the sake of flying.
Will power dive straight down and pull up inches above the ground and then perch on the extended arm.
That is all that I know.
Okay. Thanks.
How did you record? With your phone?
Ban DDT!
LOL. No phones in 1982. Used a cassette recorder. A large one, I might add.
Thanks.
We have plenty of birds in our yard, which is about 5 acres of wild woods.
Maybe they are “on the down low” or are trannys?
let’s hope not! LOL
Windmills and solar panels?
I keep out food bowls for stray cats and have noticed an increased number of cardinals in my yard, all of whom are coming to the food bowls, when the cats aren't actively eating, to feed on the kibbles in the bowls. Oft-times, there are several mating pairs feeding at the bowls, with one of the pair acting as lookout while the other feeds. When the first one is done feeding, they swap places.
I love crows. They’re very intelligent, and would make good pets. But even though many consider them pests and at times they’ve been viciously exterminated, it’s illegal to take one in the US.
A lot of people do not want birds on their property, saying they are messy and noisy. People actively tear down nests to keep them from making a mess on a walkway or porch, under a tree. People are getting pickier.
The same people will scream when they read this that something MUST be done to protect the birds.
People are just crazy now, no concept of realities of wildlife.

Crows are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act but can be taken out of season, without a permit, when caught in the act of committing, or about to commit, damage to ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock or wildlife, or are concentrated in numbers and in a manner that constitutes a health hazard or nuisance.
Minnesota has three crow seasons.

I agree crows are a smart bird. You say it’s illegal to take one in the US...in Kentucky we have a crow season and you can take one year round if it’s doing depredation. I never bother them, as when I was a kid my neighbor had a pet one that could say a few words.
