Oregon sees push for strictest gun storage law in US

Carol Manstrom says she lost her 18-year-old son when he grabbed his father’s unsecured pistol and shot himself. Paul Kemp lost his brother-in-law when a man opened fire with a stolen AR-15 assault-style rifle at a shopping mall.

On Wednesday, Manstrom and Kemp helped deliver 2,000 signatures to Oregon’s elections office as part of an effort to get a measure on the 2020 ballot that would create the stiffest law in America requiring the safe storage of firearms.

The initiative would require guns to be secured with a trigger or cable lock, or in a locked container. It also mandates that a lost or stolen firearm be reported within 24 hours and makes violators of the measure liable for any injury from an unsecured weapon, except in matters of self-defense or defense of another person.

Massachusetts is the only state in the country that requires all people to keep their firearms safely stored when not under their immediate control, said Allison Anderman, managing attorney at Giffords, a gun-control advocacy group. The Oregon initiative goes further because each violation can carry a fine up to $2,000. …

Storage laws infringe the “keeping” part of the Second Amendment.

And had they grabbed the car keys? Or downed a gallon bleach? Or had unrestricted access to rope? These people really are idiots.

According to DOJ crime statistics, guns are used 2,000 times a day to prevent violent crimes.

But screw those 2,000 people.

We have a civil right to virtue-signal away their right to self-defense.

“...It also mandates that a lost or stolen firearm be reported within 24 hours”

So if a gun is stolen or lost, the owner becomes a criminal if the loss isn’t reported and becomes liable for anything a thief does with it. This is in addition to requiring guns to be locked up so thieves aren’t liable to injury during robberies. Nice.

OreGONE. Overrun by cali-trash and other leftist loons.

All the people in the central and eastern part of the start should storm and liberate Portland, the seat of tyranny and home base for Antifa commie shock troops.

Occupational safety for the criminals and discourages gun ownership, it’s a two-fer in their eyes.

WHEN & IF we pass a FEDERAL law that requires a 10-20 year MANDATORY PRISON SENTENCE for committing or attempting any felony while armed with any deadly weapon & that PERIOD OF IMPRISONMENT must be SERVED IN FULL before beginning any other prison sentence that the criminal has been accessed for other crimes.

IF we did that ONE thing, the armed felony crime rate would fall by at least HALF.

The problem is how the left has upended our culture.

When I was a kid, and certainly looooooong before that, firearms were just left in a corner by the door, or in a rack in the back window of a pickup. Hand guns probably on a top shelf in a closet. You could shoot just about any varmint in your yard with a BB gun or 22.

Sears and just about any hardware store sold guns and ammo.

And there were no mass murders and very few accidents.

As a kid I knew a gun killed people for real, I knew better than to pick up a gun and point it at someone.

That’s all changed thanks to our progressives creating policies designed to social engineer our society into being anti 2nd A.

Let me see if I understand this. Ms Manstrom was a s****y mother who raised a f*****-up son who killed himself, so now everyone else in the state needs to suffer because of it. Is that about it?

Wouldn’t it be simpler, cheaper, faster, and less of an imposition on everyone else if she was just to get some serious grief counseling?

The initiative would require guns to be secured with a trigger or cable lock, or in a locked container.

So there's almost no way one could be used for self-defense.

IIRC in a recent,or fairly recent, decision SCOTUS addressed a similar state law/regulation and ruled that a person's 2nd Amendment rights are basically nullified if the firearm isn't quickly available to one who needs it for self defense.

If this is passed, and if I'm correct in my assumption regarding a past SCOTUS ruling, this wouldn't be the first time a Maoist state legislature blatantly defied SCOTUS. In 2016 SCOTUS struck down...in a 9-0 decision...a Massachusetts law which was in direct defiance of two SCOTUS decisions regarding the 2nd amendment. The case is called Caetano v Massachusetts and is easily found on google (I'm too lazy to provide a link).

I fear this law would be quickly turned against us by those who wish us ill. The reality is that the ‘gun problem’ is largely a problem of young men with little or no impulse control who happen to be “of color” who also happen to be in possession of guns. Because that reality cannot be said aloud, the ‘gun problem’ is never going to be solved.

But there are legal gun owners who are really not part of the problem, but they are going to be the ones targeted for enforcement.

History has shown that weaker civil civilizations are taken over by stronger civilizations. When that happens, the strong civilization usually, but not always, exterminates the weaker civilization. When the weaker civilization is not exterminated by the stronger civilization, they are enslaved and worked to death by the stronger civilization. That is the facts of life taught by history since the Garden of Eden.

A locked gun takes time to unlock. I guess in their law they could require the intruder to give a certain amount of time before they start their criminal violence!

“...a lost or stolen firearm be reported within 24 hours...”

So every gun owner has to do a daily physical inventory of all of their weapons?

A friend of mine’s wife lost her brother when a neighbor kid shot him while playing with a gun.

Instead of being insane and requiring stupid rules or not allowing guns in the home, she insists that her kids learn proper and serious firearm safety.

That’s what mature people do.
