True. But I have had to be guardian over someone with Alzheimer’s and have seen it with other relatives. Pretty sure there is no way I am going through that...but yes, I might change my mind.

If you can smell those two things (like orange zest or a freshly cut open orange) you're fine.

Decreased sense of smell is usually one of the first symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The ability to smell peanut butter may work as an early indicator of Alzheimer's, particularly if you can smell it through your right nostril but not your left.

5 Things Your Sense Of Smell Says About Your Health

Loss of sense of smell can, however, can result from many other things, such as a cold, allergies, a sinus infection, or even Parkinson's disease.

Loss of Smell

Actually, in many Alzheimer’s victims that I have known, recent memories are the first thing to go.

And recent memory loss is not confined to yesterday or last week.
It can be memory loss of 10 minutes ago.

the conversation can go like this:
"What would you like for supper"-you answer the question.
Ten minutes later, "What would you like for supper.- You answer the question again.
Ten more minutes go by " It is getting late what would you like for supper. -I have told you two times what I wanted for supper.
The answer is" well if you did, I don't remember".

Your life has just changed, and all the medical people can't help out. - tom

The trouble is that you can develop the same recent memory issues from normal aging. I find myself sometimes asking the same question I asked a few minutes ago; however, I will usually remember that I asked the question and that I got an answer, I just don't remember the answer, which is more a symptom of just not paying attention.

Here is the peanut butter screening test for Alzheimer's disease:

How it works: Alzheimer's typically affects your sense of smell because the area of the brain that processes odors, the olfactory cortex, is the first to show signs of dysfunction. (Memory problems come later.) That's why Jennifer Stamps, a researcher at the University of Florida, developed the peanut butter test, the results of which were recently published in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences. Normal aging can affect your sense of smell, but peanut butter isn't an odor usually lost with time, Stamps says, making it a good tool for evaluating early Alzheimer's. In the study, researchers measured the distance at which participants could smell peanut butter through the left nostril compared with the right. Those with early Alzheimer's could not detect the smell until it was an average of almost 5 inches closer to the left nostril compared with the right.

What to do: It's hard to perform the test by yourself, so grab a partner. Close your eyes and ask your partner to hold a small jar of peanut butter 12 inches away from your left nostril while you hold your right nostril closed. Slowly move the jar closer until you're able to detect the smell. Now test your right nostril. You should be able to smell the peanut butter equally well in both nostrils. If you can't, see your doctor to rule out treatable conditions that affect smell.

If only this had been available a decade ago my mother might still be alive. Thank goodness to hear this.

Good news for the Biden camp.

Biden's problem is that stupid generally does not get better as you get older. Biden was stupid over 30 years ago the first time he ran for president and got caught stealing a British politician's life story for his campaign speeches and has not gotten less stupid with age.

The tin foil hat didn’t work, but the tin foil hat lined with magnets did.
This is hard to swallow.

Go back to the room you came from and you will remember the info. The problem is called a “gateway event”. Look it up.

If it will help me remember why I came into the room, I’ll wear the damn thing for a week.

If you forget what you walked to another room for, it helps to walk back to the room you came from and look around. It has something to do with how the brain refreshes memory when you walk out of a room.

Or simply forget there was no way you'd go through that.

Mom was just formally diagnosed with dementia. *sigh*

Almost exactly what my father did, except his suffering was from a stroke.

The note he left to my mother next to a family picture: “Dere one, I kst you”. That was the best he could manage. God bless him.
