The UAW announced Sunday morning that it would strike "effective at midnight tonight" after contract negotiations fell through.
During a press conference on Sunday, the union's vice president said it informed GM that its membership would follow through after the contract ended Saturday at 11:59 p.m..
"This is our last resort," said VP Terry Dittes.
A spokesman said the strike impacts about 48,000 UAW workers at GM plants across the country.

Bye bye GM.
Beyond stupid
Uh oh, gonna be some bummed people who are chomping at the bit to get their new Vette. I wonder how long this will last.
If GM has a glut of unsold cars the a strike for a few weeks might help?
GM vehicles suck anyway. Good riddance. I owned a 1972 vega GT and then doubled down by buying a 1980 Buick Skylark. Unknowingly being a beta tester for a car manufacturer is no picnic. I’m not doin’ it.
I just look forward to when we all get to bail them out, again.

Idiots. They think its still the 1970s. Even Michigan is a right to work state now.
HA! GM is for all intents and purposes owned by the UAW. That’s basically who Soetoro gave it to when he stole it from the stockholders.
There are going to be lots of angry 2020 Corvette owners.
GM spent a bundle getting this launched and the Union is going to kill it.
Wow...... I’m glad i just bought my $60,000 four door long bed pick up with 4 wheel drive and the super navigation package and heated leather seats. /s
Oh and I forgot.
To hell with the GM UAW employees. I hope they wreck the company and then go jobless.
They stole my retirement GM bonds that would have survived the bankruptcy
What, they’re only making $50 per hour and they want $60 now?
BTW, I thought Obama gave the unions 25% of GM. Why are they striking against themselves?
Strip all of the unnecessary protectionist regulations and
several car companies will emerge overnight then
real competition will cause the price of vehicles to plummet.
Anyone got a few mill they can lend me to get one started?

Yep, it was just looking great for jobs in Bowling Green...
Ok so jobless claims leap by 48,000+ in a week or so and the lame stream media, on que starts blaring stories about recession, gloom and doom and on and on.
More proof why it is not China, Mexico, or the Man in the Moon that is the cause of our lack of international competitiveness.
The anti-business, mostly unconstitutional totalitarian Federal Government who protects and mandates union membership is the REAL root cause of our industrial and manufacturing difficulties.
I would never buy a GM vehicle. I have a Honda CRV now and, if I ever need another vehicle, I would look at Honda, Ford and Toyota.
I have a friend who recently bought a pre-owned Equinox and, even though it has nice bells and whistles, it’s a rough ride. You feel every bump in the road while in it.
This is his second Equinox, and I’m baffled why he got it, because he replaced one that had failing engine mounts, not a small problem, and that vehicle wasn’t that old.
His father worked for GM, so he gets the standard family discount. I suppose that’s worth something.
