This is why I said we should demand that congress people and their families switch health plans with the old veterans health plan of yesterday

My car in 1966 and most of 1967 was a 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible. In 1968, one of my Orange County friend’s fathers owned an American Motors dealership in or near Fullerton and he gave his son a brand new 1968 AMX Javelin with the 390, four speed and the “Go-Pac” option which I drove extensively one night up and down the PCH in the vicinity of Huntington Beach. Given the choice, I’d have taken the AMX in a heartbeat.

It’s a generational thing.

Below a certain age people actually BELIEVE that everything in the health and wellness sphere should be FREE.

And once they comprise 50.0001% of the electorate, they are going to vote that in.

Much of what passes for “counseling” these days is nothing more than a scam. Case-in-point? I have a friend who’s about my age (early 60s). He has a 40-something daughter who has moved back home, with teenage daughter in tow. Went back to school after her latest divorce, and completed two worthless degrees. Now, with $100K in student loan debt, she’s decided to “focus” on her daughter, during her last year in high school, on the “advice” of her therapist, and delay looking for a full-time job until after her graduation.

Told my friend he should send his daughter to me. My advice to her would be simple: 40 is too old to be living with your parents. You need to get off your lazy duff and find an actual job, one that would allow you to support yourself and your daughter. And if you can’t find something full-time, string together a couple of part-time jobs. And BTW, plenty of parents are able to “focus” on their graduating offspring AND hold down a full-time job. The focus plan is garbage and if your counselor endorses it, they aren’t worth the title.

Also advised my friend to take the deadbeat daughter out of his will. In the event of his sudden demise, it’s a given she would try to take control of the estate and muscle her mother out of the way. Told him you can always put her back in if she grows up and becomes a responsible adult. If she doesn’t, her “inheritance” is all the free rent, utilities and groceries she’s getting right now.

Haven’t heard much from him since offering that advice. But stories like that are being played out across America by the millions, aided and abetted by worthless therapists who tell their clients what they want to hear, and wait for the insurance payments to roll in.

The way to analyze that situation - apart from the behavioral dysfunction - is that the $100K in student loan debt is a welfare payment - to the schools she attended, and it is a debt to be paid by the taxpayers. I have seen this situation over and over - where someone didn’t know “where they were going”, and wasn’t inclined to work, so they took out federally guaranteed student loans and pursued any available degree (regardless of employment prospects.) It would be amusing except for the fact that this misdirection is layering debt on the backs of taxpayers, many of whom did not attend college, and did not pursue worthless degrees.

People - we have over 1.5 Trillion $ of student loan debts in this country - about 85% of which is federally guaranteed. Anyone remember the S&L crisis? That was involving something on the order of $150B.

And the schools should pony up endowments and sell assets and pay!

They were the direct beneficiaries and pushed loans onto the students.

Can’t disagree with anything in your post. I’ve always said the solution to this problem is fairly simple. First, tie student loan interest rates to demand for the degree/potential for repayment. So, if you’re majoring in accounting, computer science, engineering or another high-demand field, your interest rate will be very low. If you’re pursuing an gender or ethnic studies degree with almost no market value, your interest rate will be similiar to someone with a 550 credit score getting an auto loan—interest rates somewhere around 20-25%. That will (hopefully) scare some students into more viable programs that will get them a real job and allow them to pay back their loans.

Second step, restore competition in the market place. Thanks to “Congressional reforms,” Uncle Sam is essentially the only game in town for student loans. Getting more lenders back in the game will give students more options and drive down loan rates.

Third, limit borrowing to only school expenses: tuition, books, and fees. You should not be able to finance your education AND an apartment in a expensive zip code on student loans. I remember reading about a Boston U grad who racked up $200K in student loan debt for an undergrad degree in sociology. Boston U is a very good (and expensive) school, but turns out that much of debt was used to finance off-campus housing during her four years in Boston. Make students put some skin in the game. It is possible to go to school and work, and use that income to cover housing and other expenses.

Finally, I would do everything possible to get more students into vocational education. We’ve got too many baristas with worthless degrees, making minimum wage, with no prospect for advancement, and too few welders, machinists, nurses and advanced manufacturing technicians. You can complete one of those latter programs in less than a year and Pell Grants typically cover all costs. How about paying students who earn their welding, machinist or Mechatronics certifications a bonus for earning their credential and a stipend for each year they spend in the career field (up to the five-year point). It would be a much better investment than lending someone $100K for a degree that is worthless and leaves the student unable to pay back the loan.

as an old VN Vet...”One night” does not impress me much....unless you got paid to drive it again the 2nd nite....

But in any event...”Welcome home Brother”

(just as a scientific observation...are you still married to your HS sweetheart?)
