Pentagon chief suggests European allies replace funds diverted to border wall

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that European nations should consider funding projects in their countries after the Pentagon diverted money to pay for a border wall with Mexico...

...“The message that I’ve been carrying, since when I was acting secretary to today, has been about the increase in burden sharing,” Esper told reporters in London late on Thursday.

“So part of the message will be ‘Look, if you’re really concerned then maybe you should look to cover those projects for us’ because that’s going to build infrastructure in many cases in their countries,” he added.

“Part of the message is burden sharing, ‘Maybe pick up that tab.’”

Some of the projects affected are in Europe, like $21.6 million for port operation facilities in Spain and $59 million for munitions storage in Slovakia.

The defunded projects also include schools for the children of military personnel in Germany and the United Kingdom.

We should just leave NATO and come home.

Let the socialists eat the entire cost of their defense.

The headline is a lie. There is no indication in the article that the Secretary even mentioned the Wall, as the headline implies. The idea of our European and other allies carrying more of the load for their own security has been a long-standing policy of the Trump Administration.

He specifically said they should pay for the projects that were cancelled or delayed to pay for the wall.

Maybe we shouldn’t have military bases in those countries. At the very least the country should be paying for it (if they want it)

"He specifically said they should pay for the projects that were cancelled or delayed to pay for the wall."

Ca you provide the direct quote from the Defense Secretary? I'm not seeing it in the article.

“Those projects” are the ones that are being delayed or cancelled to pay for the wall, the article didn’t give us the full context but obviously some European countries had been complaining about the projects being delayed or cancelled.

They want their welfare:

“Some of the projects affected are in Europe, like $21.6 million for port operation facilities in Spain and $59 million for munitions storage in Slovakia. “

We take of OUR people first, then anyone else a distant second.

Plus we have our own internal domestic enemy that needs to be dealt with.

I’ll bet Hungary would help. Even if they could only afford a minuscule amount.

What exactly are we defending Spain from? If we need a port in Spain to defend the supply of oil through the Suez Canal from the likes of Iran, most of that oil goes to Europe and they should be footing the bill anyway, even though they're busy trying to kiss Iran's behind. Build the wall.

He doesn’t say that. He doesn’t say anything about the wall. The article writers simply made that up.

Why are taxpayer funds being spent in foreign nations anyway?

Agree with fidelis. He doesn’t say the wall. And why are we paying for these things anyway? The whole world is using us as their grant machine!

These projects could have been cancelled for any number of reasons including a reevaluation of wasteful spending on non-priority projects, etc.
