Data gathered by President Trumps campaign shows he would suffer a loss of support during the 2020 election by supporting gun control. ABC News reports that the data is comprised of campaign polling conducted before recent back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, that left 31 dead.
The data suggests support for stricter background checks among a majority of Americans, but gun control measures would be unpopular with Trumps base.
Trump ran on a pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment platform in 2016.
Trump talked about a bipartisan effort for stronger background checks on August 5 and 7, just days after the El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, shootings. Days later he appeared to pivot away from the push.
Hours after the August 31, 2019, Midland-Odessa shootings Trump said, I will say that for the most part, sadly if you look at the last four or five going back even five or six or seven years, for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it.
On September 6, 2019, Breitbart News reported that Trump met with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) about gun control measures including expanded background check legislation.

“very meaningful background checks
Depends on what meaningful meant.
Knowing today’s hate-filled liberals, I don’t believe it. If President Trump came out in favor of gun control, the liberals would do an about-face and become the strongest defenders of the Second Amendment you ever saw.

Remember when FR was gung-ho about GW Bush?

“You have got to be joking. Liberals will pocket every GOP concession and ask for more. Give them background checks and theyll ask for gun seizures.”
Any chance they get.

That’s a huge understatement!
The only reason that there wasn't a huge uproar about the bump stock ban is because a bump stock is just a stupid gimmick. The accuracy of any gun with a bump stock gun is for shit. Anyone seriously contemplating about a gun battle with a fully automatic weapon is going to convert the gun to be a full automatic and they won't want to mess around with bump stocks.
Yup, I think Donnie Jr. educated Dad on this topic.
Trump already got his 2A mulligan on the bump stock ban ...
G.W. Bush beat the hell out liberal pukes Gore and Kerry, and those were the only choices.
Gun control is the ONE way for President Trump to lose 2020.
He better realize it, too. NO MORE INFRINGEMENTS.
Someone let Mike Gallagher know this. He was all over the radio this morning touting an editorial by the New York post which said that Trump would be more popular with moderates if he endorsed universal background checks. I strenuously disagreed, even before reading this article. He will lose a big part of his base.
I would add that losing a big part of his base includes me, and I have strenuously and proudly advocated for, and defended, him. You see, my paternal grandfather ran from communism in the early 1920s as a young man, leaving behind most of his family who were trapped there. His parents lost everything they had ever worked for, and my great grandfather was later beaten to death by Stalins NKVD goons. Note that these Russian leftists had very thorough gun control, including their version of universal background checks. Not terribly long afterwards, relatives on my mothers side of the family in Poland were victimized to an even larger extent by German Leftists (I.e. the were murdered), who also had their version of universal background checks. Because of the gun control in Russia and in German controlled Eastern Europe, my relatives had no ability to say no to anything that those two governments decided to do. It may well be that I and my family are similarly victimized - but I swear that it will not be for free this time... and ANY politician who tries to make it easier for some future government to do those kinds of things is not getting my vote under any conditions. I will stay home on election day and reload, or else go to the range.
The gun issue is my only litmus test. A politicians views and actions on firearms policy are like a Vulcan mind meld - it unerringly tells you if they are serious about our liberties and their oath of office, or if they are just statist shitbags.
That is a fact. Let’s hope that the Democrats and media son’t sucker him into it like they did Bush 1 on raising taxes. Time will tell.
Ditto to infinity on your final paragraph.
Agreed.
