Nicola Sturgeon has said she will ask for the legal powers to stage a new independence referendum next year as she unveiled a swathe of measures to combat climate heating.
The first minister told MSPs on Tuesday she would ask the UK government for a section 30 order enabling Holyrood to hold a second independence vote once a new Scottish referendum bill is passed.
.... She did not mention polls that indicate the Scottish National party would win more than 50 of Scotlands 59 Commons seats, but said she wanted to be prepared. We intend to offer the people of Scotland the choice of a better and more positive future as an independent nation, she said.
We will seek agreement to the transfer of power that will put the referendum beyond legal challenge. We have a clear democratic mandate to offer the choice of independence within this term of parliament and we intend to do so.
Ian Blackford, the SNPs Westminster leader, said earlier on Tuesday an election gave his party a fantastic opportunity to strengthen the mandate for independence. It would allow Scotlands voters to send a very clear message to Westminster that we should be able to determine our own future, he said.

We live in interesting times!
And so it begins... (or perhaps in this case, the end begins...)

“we should be able determine our own future”
Global climate myths are about controlling people.
Boris should tell Scotland, “You had the first independence vote in 320 years just 4 years ago and voted it down, you can have another one in 2335.”
Monster turnout (85%) and pretty clear and overwhelmingly NO to independence (55%).
Sounds like another case of voting till getting the desired result.
Yes. I am looking forward to November 1 after the UK has left.
There is too much animosity, too much discord.
When Brexit happens, that will not end the discord - but it will end one statement “oh, just wait for brexit” - so one variable removed.
A 5.1% swing isnt overwhelming.
Scotland is a drain on England’s purse. England would be better off without it.
So,unlike a few years ago,Scotland's dwindling oil reserves are of no consequence today.
It's difficult to see Scotland's economy doing very well on whiskey and haggis exports. But I'm sure the SNP would have no problem with Scotland becoming just another EU protectorate...like Spain,Italy,Greece,Poland, etc, etc.
Spain is doing very well. They had a few rough years due to over extension but no more.
What makes you think Spain is a protectorate?
Yeah, you are right. But, it ain’t no chad territory either.
The women are beautiful and the men are ugly.
Denied.
The Scots got a vote already. They need to wait at least a generation before voting on the matter again. The SNP is always going to whine for another vote because they lost. They can be ignored.
An independent Scotland will fall somewhere between Venezuela and Cuba on the political spectrum.
True. It was a pre-Brexit vote though.(if that matters)
Once Brexit happens, the Scots will be clamoring for independence so they can rejoin the EU. Is that irony?
Scotland, my ancestral home of poets, thinkers and warriors, has become New Jersey.
Fixed it for you.
