Freeport, Grand Bahama (CNN)Across the northern Bahamas, what used to be stunning islands are now scenes of widespread destruction. Hurricane Dorian pulverized the islands for two days, hurling catastrophic winds and relentless rain. It was the strongest storm ever to make landfall in the country.
Now, the only airport on the island of Grand Bahama has been ripped apart by Dorian. "After two days of trying, we're finally able to get into the Freeport airport," CNN's Patrick Oppmann said from the scene Wednesday.
"It's gone. ... The level of devastation is actually breathtaking. There are no walls left at the airport. The ceiling has come crashing."
The airport's obliteration deals a devastating blow for residents who desperately need medical evacuations or emergency aid. "The runway field is now a debris field," Oppmann said. "I don't think even a helicopter could land there." Now that Dorian's vicious clouds are slowly crawling up the southeast US coast, Bahamians are finally seeing sunlight again. "Nothing compares to what we went through the past two days," survivor Michael Hynes said. "Almost 48 hours now with nonstop carnage."
At least seven people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed. Authorities say that number will almost surely rise.

That’s the thing that is missed.
The hurricane itself, that would otherwise do a normal level of damage there, stopped and just ground-down everything for hours.
Believe it or not but the water from PB to Freeport was flat today. People are organizing, gathering stuff and will be boating things over soon.
Seabees should be sent with orders to show the world a speedy reopening of that airport.
Time to get the sea planes going.
The people are friendly, courteous and helpful. They are more like Americans than a lot of Americans are.................
...
They haven’t been ruined by the Democrats and their corrupt lapdog media.
The Army Corps of Engineers could get a decent runway up and running in no time.
Hopefully some CH 47 can bring in engineering equipment to clear the airport and get it ready for c 130 to bring in
supplies and do medical evacs
That is probably to only way to get in or out for the next several weeks, if not months.
The Airport runways are probably unusable for the foreseeable future..............
They don’t have a chip on their shoulder................
I think most of them are now nearing the end of their useful lives...............
Prayers for the people of the Bahamas.
Now that the storm is gone, down to business. Clear and repair the runway would seem to be top priority. Also open some shipping ports so supplies can come in.
FWIW, when you see pictures of what looks like concrete buildings still standing if its anything like the destruction we saw when visiting islands after Irma and Marie the inside of those buildings are completely gutted. Nothing remains inside except the walls.
Yes, and clearing an LZ would be comparatively easy.
more than likely water and medicines will be choppered in followed soon by the SeaBees. They will only need a few days to set up a serviceable runway.
Have you heard any update on the number of deaths in the Bahamas? The only number I’ve hear is “5” and that is from 2-3 days ago. I consider it a miracle if that is the total count. If, of course they don’t add the people who die of other causes over the next couple of years to inflate the total as was done in Puerto Rico.
Unfortunately, I think many were swept away and probably will never be found.
11 was last I heard.....................
He is a young’n... but you are correct Rom.
Tell it to the Queen....not our job.
One of the U.S. Navy’s hospital ships will anchort offshore - I bet, and maybe some other kind of Navy supply ship. Why? Because we have to? No. Just because we have the ability and it makes good global P.R.
