California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, on Tuesday signed a bill that no longer requires any "able-bodied person 18 years of age or older" in the state to help an officer who requests assistance during an arrest.

The Sacramento Bee reported that the old law, the California Posse Comitatus Act of 1872, was common in the country’s early days, but Sen. Bob Hertzberg, a Los Angeles Democrat who sponsored the bill, called the old law a “vestige of a bygone era." The law was employed to help catch runaway slaves, the report said.

“The Sacramento Bee reported that the old law, the California Posse Comitatus Act of 1872...”

Isn’t the Sacramento Bee the satire site?

Did Fox get out-foxed?

The Sacramento Bee is legitimate. You’re thinking of the Babylon Bee - that’s the satire site.

Babylon Bee is the satire site. SackOfBS is the one that sometimes prints fake news.

Since slavery officially ended in the US in 1865, it is difficult for me to understand how any law passed in 1872 could have been used to catch runaway slaves.

Bob, it is time for you to go back to history class before you put your foot further into your mouth.

A law passed after slavery ended was created to catch runaway slaves? I don’t think so. Just another identity politics throw away line.

I do agree with eliminating this law though. A very anti-individual law.

I used to live in California but I never heard of that law.

Nonetheless, I helped two Police Officers fight a group of suspects in the L.A. Bus station years ago. We won.

The Sacramento Bee was where one of Mike Nifong’s media co-conspirators was given refuge. The Babylon Bee is more believable.

Slavery was never a big issue in California either.

...

This bill is political theater by the Democrats, so why not add a lie to it.

So the commie is trying to further divide other residents from police. Bad policy, IMO.

If there is no law, there is no law

That leaves the governor vulnerable when he is out on the street

Narrative is more important than facts. Slavery bad. Law to help catch slaves bad (even if law was passed *after* emancipation... they know most won’t know history). Ergo, law must go.

Sheeeeyit. What a smokescreen. This law was was passed so Newsom FredocRATS in the CA legislature could tack on and funnel tens of millions of dollars in unrelated spending to themselves and their cronies.

IF perchance I’m passing thru a staunch communist, anti-gun state like CA, they won’t have to worry too much about me stopping & helping one of their gestapo-style LEOs...law or no law.
