Oriana Powells decision not to vote in the 2016 presidential election haunts her. ***
I didnt really contemplate what that would mean giving it to the other side, said the 30-year-old Democrat and Detroit native. ***
Theres just one problem: Many of her fellow African American voters, a core segment of this states Democratic base, also believe the party let them down. In Detroit in 2016, voter turnout dipped compared with the two previous presidential elections.
The love just wasnt there for Hillary Clinton the way it was for Barack Obama among black voters in Michigan, or in traditional urban strongholds in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where Trump eked out the victories that put him in the White House.
This time feels different. African Americans here working moms like Powell, LGBTQ people, workers in the gig economy expressed deep passion about voting in 2020. But Democrats cant take them for granted. Voters in this city, which is 80% African American, say theyre fed up with helping Democrats win, only to be undermined, sidelined or forgotten later. They want assurances that the 2020 presidential candidates will deliver on promises that help get them elected. ***
Other voters, disappointed over the Democrats failure to fix key problems in the black community, such as high jobless rates, rampant home foreclosures, poor schools and business decline, may be harder to bring back. ***
John Ware, an African American whos been living in the same working-class section of southwest Detroit since the 1960s, isnt sold.
Theyre all liars, said Ware, 56.
He didnt vote in 2016 and feels so exasperated with politicians that he doesnt know what they could say to get him to vote next year.

“Many of her fellow African American voters, a core segment of this states Democratic base, also believe the party let them down.”
Really? I cant see what would make them believe that.
LOL! Don’t count on it. If the coalition of collectives/collectivists doesn’t tick off Americans in 2020, they’ll really enrage you in the future.
In 2016, 3% of blacks in FL, NC and PA stayed home. This essentially swung FL.
Since then, his approval among blacks is 2x to 3x what he got in 2016. I don’t expect all will vote for him, but if he gets 12% black and another 3-8% stay home, it’s curtains for the DemoKKKrats.
Kamala is almost guaranteed the veep spot solely for this reason. Token spice.
The slaves should remain quiet, and vote for whichever rich old white Democrat plantation master they are told to.
That Plantation is hard to leave, eh?
Kamala as VP? I heard Stacy Abrams from Georgia is on the short list of running mates, for the same reason, to get a black female presence in the ticket.
Stacy may not have a hefty enough national political profile to be a top choice.
If there's an African-American woman on the ticket? Expect black men to go even BIGGER! The last thing a black man wants to hear is some angry harpie sounding like the cross between Strelnikov of "Doctor Zhivago", and Aunt Esther.
Sure, they'll "say" they're voting for the Kamala, or Stacy Abrams, or Big Mike Obama, but that's only to please their wives/girlfriends/mothers/grandmothers. When they get into the privacy of the voting booth, they'll vote for The Man, Donald J. Trump.
I worked with a black fellow for many years. He was a good worker, smart, dependable, friendly and I considered him my friend. But.......... he was convinced OJ was innocent and he voted straight Dem ticket.
I think so too. I sometimes listen to a Detroit black talk radio station. One could conclude it is impossible to appease these people. I really don’t know what it would take to make them happy. The way they perceive the country is another universe from what we see.
I disagree.
“The love just wasnt there for Hillary Clinton the way it was for Barack Obama..”
Of course the love wasn’t there...same vile politics but Hillary is no part hlack.
Most of them will still vote for the freebies.
I’m watching Dinesh D’Souzas documentary “Hillarys America” which I never saw before. Anyone ever see it? Holy cow! WOW, does this flick absolutely OBLITERATE the Rat party. If every black person in country watched this the Democratic party would be absolutely finished, toast, fried. I am passing word of this around.
There's a phrase we won't hear often.
Kamala will 100% be on the ticket. The question is at which end ...
Doesn’t matter
If as few of about 15% vote for Trump the Democrats lose.
I know quite a few black people who have changed their mind about OJ=innocent. Perceptions can change with time, so maybe not all hope is lost.
