Texas gunman was fired from job, called FBI before shooting

ODESSA, Texas (AP) — The gunman in a spate of violence after a routine traffic stop in West Texas had just been fired from his job and called both police and the FBI before the shooting began, authorities said Monday.

Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said 36-year-old Seth Aaron Ator had been fired Saturday from Journey Oilfield Services. He said both Ator and the company called 911 after the firing but that Ator was gone by the time police showed up. FBI special agent Christopher Combs says Ator’s statements on the phone were “rambling.”

Authorities said Ator killed seven people and injured at least 22 others Saturday before officers killed him outside a busy movie theater in Odessa.

Combs said Ator “was on a long spiral down” before the shooting and that he went to work that day “in trouble.”

“This did not happen because he was fired. He showed up to work enraged,” said FBI special agent Christopher Combs of the suspected shooter.

Combs said the place where Ator lived was “a strange residence” and that the condition reflected “what his mental state was going into this.” He didn’t elaborate.

Online court records show Ator was arrested in 2001 for a misdemeanor offense that would not have prevented him from legally purchasing firearms in Texas, although authorities have not said where Ator got the “AR style” weapon he used.

Mental health issue. This is the problem no one wants to address.

It’s hard to solve. In america you can’t put people away because they are crazy. But if we don’t then we live with the risk that they will do crazy shit.

But if you do lock up crazy people for being crazy then it’s just a matter of time before the gov’t declares you crazy if you disagree with their agenda.

Sounds like a real sicko.

But, with relatively few externally readable symptoms. Trespassing, traffic.

How to screen people like this, how to figure the balance in restricting their freedoms (and therefore that of many others), versus waiting for the cleanup is a big problem, to which I don't have a happy answer.

One is for everyone to be armed, enforce politeness, and accept some unfortunate collateral damage.

Another is the Singapore solution--touch a weapon and you are caned close to death. But then, you have to have tremendous trust in your government.

“This did not happen because he was fired. He showed up to work enraged,”
Dart them with a tranquilizer when they start percolating.

Ha ha. We just had layoffs at my office two

have appreciated a heads up.

He was living off the Grid, just like the Unibomber was.

He could have been living that way in case a Terminator from the Future came back to find him. You never know.

In other words, he needed to be in a mental institution. But instead, the commies shut those down and emptied them. Because of that, we now have homelessness, shootings, and such.

I guess the FBI was too busy investigating Trump.

Or, he was just a dead beat with insurmountable student loan debt. If only it would have been dismissed...

I expect some cuts later this year based on the rumbling and rumors plus experience.

In most cases, there were decent packages.

He called Jim Comey, who wrote it down in his ‘diary’ and leaked it to the press.

Gee. I wonder if he has been over medicated for any mental issues or maybe missed a dose?

"One is for everyone to be armed,..."

I totally agree. I never go anywhere unarmed. Of course I live in a gun friendly state.

[[[Mental health issue. This is the problem no one wants to address.]]]

And one the left has absolutely no interest in. They want this to demagogue their gun control agenda.

Just like juvenile records, they will never unseal them.

“In america you can’t put people away because they are crazy.”

We used to.

Progressives fought to have them released, and won.
Now we have to deal with nutcases, from homelessness to mass murder, who won’t choose treatment.
