A new law requires boat operators to wear an emergency engine cutoff switch or a kill switch lanyard starting Sept. 1, 2019.
So what should you know and how can this affect you?
State Game Warden Shane Lewis told ABC 7, kill switches are just as important as wearing a life jacket, and he's glad now theyre legally required. Im actually surprised the law hadnt been into effect prior to this, its a very important law and its going to really improve the safety of boating on the water, said Lewis. Lets say that you were ejected from a boat and you were not wearing that kill switch, your boat could then violently stay in motion depending on the speed that is already set in.

Kali is not its Cali and real home grown Californians dont use that term
You may read all links at the bottom of posts. I don’t. I read the source and title provided at the top.
I read the text provided.
During my comments here, I explained how I came to the conclusion the article was from California.
I wouldn’t have posted it any differently, so at no time was I intimating the poster made a mistake.
It was an article where the information regarding location and source could be misconstrued.
Kali, ABC(7) the Leftist outlet for Los Angeles,... made it seem like another misguided move our our state’s part.
For the most part I wasn’t putting down the issue of a kill switch, as much as the fact our leadership here in California focus on many lesser things like this without addressing the complex issues.
So far you’ve acted like a juvenile child, not happy to have simply corrected my misconception, but intent on proving I’ve been some sort of enemy of the forum or something.
Nonsense.
Grow up.
One of many do-gooder laws enacted because no politician wants to tell a grieving parent "That's a really good idea and common sense, but I do not believe in legislating common sense and good ideas".
People across the nation use Kahli to reference California. I read Kali and misinterpreted it.
I’m as home grown as one can be. I live a mile from my birthplace here in the state.
I was just joking about clipping it to something...lol.
“Law does not apply if the manufacturer did not install a Switch.”
And as I understand it, that does apply to older boats. But apparently if you buy a new boat, it is a requirement that the manufacturer install the dash plugin and supply the lanyard.
This whole thing is confusing. Some say kill switch is mandatory:
https://myparistexas.com/kalis-law-engine-cut-off-switch-law-to-go-into-effect-sept-1/
Some sites say only if it is installed by the manufacturer:
And some say it is not a requirement for older boats but a good idea:
Take your pick.

“Take your pick.”
No. You go to the state site and read the statutes.
I was told i had to wear on for my first boat Pontoon on lake circa 1998. Riverside Co Ca
I never read the bottom links unless there is a problem with the upper link.
You really are a person who acts the part of a snarky juvenile.
No, the text provided from the article is not a bottom link.
The bottom link is just that, a bottom link.
Do you know the difference?
*** “For sure, Id end up killing the engine by mistake, just when Id need it” ***
So disconnect when docking... Law makes common sense irrelevant and Insurance takes Common Sense rare.
If you can’t figure out the difference then you deserve what happens and your insurance won’t cover it anyway
If you screw up WHY should someone else have to pay for it?
Having done a little boating myself, tho’ never at anything close to 70 mph, it seems to me common sense would be:
Be aware of areas where barge wakes might occur, or any other wake, for that matter, and use one’s eyes.
Don’t go flying out of wind protected creeks, etc., until you know exactly what you are headed in to. I also always check the weather forecast carefully, including the hourly forecast graph, such as this:
before going out. The wind graph is quite useful, tho’ I always allow for winds being a little worse...
Them sailboat owners gonna be pissed - will their switch cut the mast off?
My cousin built a house on a small island off the coast in northern Panama. One day he was out fishing when he fell overboard while the boat was in a slow troll. It took him 45 minutes of swimming to catch up to the boat which fortunately was not heading in a straight line but rather in a curved direction.
After realizing he couldn't catch it directly, he had to intercept it on its course. When he finally did, he was too exhausted to climb into the boat and had to rest on the rear swim platform until he had enough energy to climb in.
You cant safely dock, single-handed, if the engine shuts off when you step away from the helm.
Agreed. The primary function of the kill switch lanyard is to disable the engine every time you reach for your drink or turn to look over your shoulder.
The Exon Valdes disaster could have been avoided if that drunken bastard had been so equipped.
I have mine on my boat key set with a good long coiled lanyard. I wear it when boating alone, when in real bad power boat traffic (which is not all that uncommon on the Lake of the Ozarks) but I frequently have it disconnected from my vest when doing things that will cause me to leave my seat.
Likewise, I wear an automatic inflatable vest. I know of too many old guys hitting their head or something else causing them to hit the water.
I would guess newer inboards have it wired in,
I had a 20 foot I/O 15 years ago that had one from the factory. Only idiots dont use them.

Since you didn’t click on the upper link how do you know there was no problem with it?
