Catestrophic Hurricane Dorian was assigned Category 5 status by the NHC Sunday, September 1 at 0800. Since then Hurricane Dorian reached maximum sustained winds of 185 MPH, with gusts exceeding 220 MPH, and storm surge 18-23 feet above normal tide levels as it made landfall across Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Dorian became the strongest hurricane in modern records for the Northwestern Bahamas.
Dorian has wrought extreme wind and flood damage to Abacos and Grand Bahama Island as it crawled slowly across the Northern Bahamas.
All interests along the Atlantic coast should continue monitoring conditions and forecasts as powerful Hurricane Dorian moves very close to the US coastline. Evacuation orders have been issued for many Atlantic coastal communities in the Southeast US. Evacuations include multiple hospitals and nursing homes along the coast with anticipated dangerous storm surge and battering waves.
Wind speed is expected to weaken and fluctuate in the coming days as the storm moves northward.

This thing is currently blowing sand on Florida beaches 150 miles from its center point. They better hope it weakens regardless.
In the last 6 hours, #Dorian has only moved a distance equivalent to the length of the Bay Bridge with constant winds between 145-155mph. I can’t even fathom that.

Fear realized.
It has weakened some and the pressure is rising. Good things we need more of.
It appears that Settlement Pt. was aptly named. And yeah, do not worry about finding anything on the northern coast of that island.
Yep. But we have a weakened Cat 6. Basically a strong 4. Sitting over the gulf stream. Wind shears and pressure ridges have to work their magic.
A weakened storm often generates a larger wind field. For a storm that is supposed to slowly work its way up the East Coast, that may mean a lot more storm surge.

Just as you said- the updates are plentiful. NHC now hourly.
Yes, they’ve announced they’re closing all of the parks early Tuesday afternoon (Epcot/Magic Kingdom @ 3; Animal Kingdom/Disney Studios @ 2)

And the attractions that close with wind and rain regularly anyway may close earlier in the day if the weather starts getting back.

As I understand it, there will be waves on top of that.
The NHC states in its latest advisory that it is expecting life threatening storm surge in Florida. They are not saying that it is only a possibility if Dorian makes landfall.
For all readers who live anywhere near the coast in the Southeast, I would encourage you to watch this:
Think of it like an earthquake off the coast that produces a Tsunami.
Not only is it like a tsunami, but it is going to cover a very, very large area. That is going to put a severe strain on rescue and recovery efforts.
But many people here, even the ones who live in Florida, do not seem to grasp the significance of these facts.
It’s good to see the dozens of utility trucks getting ready to come in and start restoring power. I’d like to think they won’t have that much to do, but...
Wow, still stationary and at 942mb after being parked there for a day...
