California Republicans worry state's tax return law could devastate their down-ballot hopes in 2020

Republicans in California are crying foul over a new law that requires gubernatorial and presidential candidates to disclose tax returns in order to appear on 2020 primary ballots -- worried about voter turnout implications for their party in numerous races, even though the law is largely aimed at President Trump.

The Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act – signed in late July by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom – was an obvious bid to compel Trump to make public his financial records if he wants his name on the ballot. But the president is unlikely to cave to the law’s provisos given his previous resistance to making tax returns public.

Republican leaders in the Golden State, however, argue that if the law actually keeps Trump off the March primary ballot, it would all but assure a depressed Republican turnout statewide -- hurting down-ballot candidates in congressional and other races and locking many out of the general election due to the state's unique primary system.

I’ll crawl over broken glass to write in Donald Trump’s name.

Of course triggering a substantial drop in Republican turnout for the 2020 primary/general elections was a desired (by the DemocRATS) outcome of this devious bit of chicanery. Satan never sleeps.

The spineless California RINOs let ballot fraud eliminate a few of their supposed safe seats, and continue to do nothing as the Party of the single party state destroys democracy in California and California itself.

Partisan Media Shills update.

It will be ruled unconstitutional in a few months.

Needs to be struck down by courts immediately.

And what about its applicability if any towards write in candidates?

What is the downside to Trump withdrawing from California for 2020?

The upside may be that him not running in such a big state would finally be an event that may force the media to acknowledge that the “national popular vote” is a completely fictional number made up by accumulating unrelated separate vote totals from the 50 states plus DC.

How could they even report on a popular vote winner or lose if Trump takes himself out of the most populous state?

If there is no significant downside, maybe that is what he should do!

Why not apply this requirement of every candidate in every race?

The same Communists who claim that Republicans are always trying to disenfranchise voters and suppress the vote.

When any law is passed that the Left hates a judge strikes it down or puts it on pause within 24 hours.

No, I don’t think the media would acknowledge that-they are that biased.

If Trump withdrew from the California primary...two curious things would occur. First, almost no one would show up to vote in the GOP primary. Second, the California delegation (172 members) would arrive at the Convention and be able to vote as a unit there. Normally, the first ballot at a convention is a ‘must-do-by-the-state-vote’ situation. After that, if the chief candidate doesn’t win....the state is allowed to vote in any manner it desires.

The amusing thing here is that it could be a Democratic and Republican election day...where only Democrats mostly show up, and Republicans avoid the primary entirely....leaving it to the state party device to operate.

So the question would arise in four years...why bother having a primary? Just caucus-up the GOP 172 members and let them vote on their own. This should be a party ‘event’ and not controlled to this extent by state law.

Federal Election....Federal Laws. We went through that with Florida.

Tax returns not required.

It’s an unconstitutional law and will be shot down in the courts.

The biggest criminals are those who are passing this law, they have conveniently excluded themselves from it

Poll taxes were intended to keep poor from voting and are illegal.
How is a rule intended to keep qualified candidates off the ballot legal?

I wouldn’t be surprised if a state required shagging an animal before being allowed to be on a ballot.

Has anyone actually filed a lawsuit against it yet? Nothing angers me more than Republicans who whine about something but do nothing to change it. They are not powerless; I think they are being lazy.

It’s unconstitutional for federal races, but it may be OK for stand and local races.

I agree.

Remember things move slowly through the courts, but this won’t see election time.
