McLEAN'S TOWN CAY, Bahamas (AP) A dangerous Hurricane Dorian closed in on the northern Bahamas early Sunday, threatening to batter islands with 150 mph (240 kph) winds, pounding waves and torrential rain as people hunkered down in schools, churches and other shelters.
In the northern stretches of the Bahamas archipelago, hotels closed, residents boarded up homes and officials hired boats to move people from low-lying areas to bigger islands as Dorian approached.
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis warned that Dorian is a "dangerous storm" and said any "who do not evacuate are placing themselves in extreme danger and can expect a catastrophic consequence."
Small skiffs shuttled Saturday between outlying fishing communities and McLean's Town, a settlement of a few dozen homes at the eastern end of Grand Bahama island, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Florida's Atlantic coast. Most people came from Sweeting Cay, a fishing town of a few hundred people about 5 feet (1.5 meters) above sea level.

I hope Sailing La Vagabonde is okay, wow....
May be too late to leave.
Winds are now sustained 175mph. And its still heading west, no turns north yet according to models.
I have a question that I’d like to throw out there for some smart and experienced FReeper considerations....
For a number of years now, Ive been thinking of purchasing a property somewhere in the Caribbean and the thought always occurs to me that the cheapest time to buy is likely right after a hurricane has passed through. Im not worried about hurricanes per se as I have quite a bit of building experience and view constructing a hurricane proof building as just another technical challenge. As well, the property might be just a place to keep a boat which of course can always be moved in the event of a storm coming in. However, so much of the Caribbean is quite corrupt and Im wondering which locations Freepers have experience with from the perspective of good governments, accessibility, general safety/security, beautiful vacation locale as well as good investment potential etc. Thoughts on this or advice on where to get good resource material and sound real estate advice?
How do you evacuate on a small island?
Boat, private plane
I believe that such development you describe happened to Jamaica after Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. Ruined agriculture became housing and resort developments.
Yeah, they are in a deep hurt locker in the Bahamas. Slow moving Cat 5 and they are ground zero.
Will Elizabeth take care of the clean up or will the US be guilted into sending aide?
I'd like two views: 3 paths from the most accurate models over the years and then SEPARATELY feel free to throw in the spaghetti view of possible paths.

EXCERPT:
Another commenter posted a message from a Bahamian that reads, I just cant wait until the U.S. media and U.S. public wake up to the fact that their government (the Obama/Hillary/Kerry government) has permitted Red China to set up shop (including deep water stealth submarine operations) in the Bahamas only a few short miles away from Florida and the entire Eastern Seaboard. I imagine most Americans will want all senior officials of the U.S. embassy in the Bahamas, the Dept of State in the U.S. and the NSA over the past decade or so to be drawn and quartered for high treason because of their serious failure to gather and act on intelligence information in order to protect the national security interests of the U.S.
Not to mention all those models can’t get the next 6 hours correct.
Yes. Evacuate
The left prays to their god of liberalism that this hurricane can be used against Trump. The a-holes used Katrina against Bush,Maria against Trump already, and that piece of sh*t Obama used Sandy to get re-elected using the crisis as a vehicle. The media whores are doing everything they can.
Yikes. The media also, without a peep, allowed them to take the Spratlys from the Philippines.
