YOU'RE THE ONE
Les tells the story proudly now, with an ending that few would have ever predicted when he was in high school. He remembers the turning point as though it were yesterday. Just a chance encounter and an offhand comment... but it changed his life forever. He had slipped quietly into the back of a classroom to wait for a friend that day. The last thing he wanted was to be noticed, but the teacher asked him to go to the board and work out a problem. Les pointed out that he wasn't a student in that class. "It doesn't matter," said Mr Washington, the teacher. "Go do it anyway." Les protested that he couldn't. Somewhat embarrassed, he added, "Because I'm 'Educable Mentally Retarded'." At that point, the teacher came out from behind his desk, looked at the embarrassed teenager and challenged him, "Don't ever say that again. Someone's opinion of you does not have to become your reality". The students laughed, of course, but Les didn't really mind so much. In a way, it was as though the teacher's comment had set him free. Someone had looked at him and seen possibilities. Les had never dared hope for that before. Perhaps he COULD move beyond the limits others had placed on him. Today, Les explains his awakening with the words of Goethe: "Look at a man the way that he is, he only becomes worse. But look at him as if he were what he could be, and then he becomes what he should be". That's how Mr. Washington became Les's mentor, and a constant source of inspiration. While still a junior, Les heard something Mr. Washington told some graduating seniors. "You have greatness within you. If just one of you can get a glimpse of a larger vision of yourself, of who you really are, the world will never be the same again. You can touch millions of people's lives." The amazing thing is that Les Brown did indeed go on to realize his dream. He has since produced a number of specials that have been shown on public television. As his old mentor had once predicted, once he found that "larger glimpse of himself," Les was able to "touch the lives of millions". Even if we're "successful," I suspect most of us never catch that vision, never understand how special we are. Not really. We're too busy trying to be someone else. After all, we are constantly bombarded by powerful messages telling us what attributes society finds most desirable. And we respond by trying to make ourselves over in that image. For many, it's not even a matter of being the best looking, the brightest, or the most admired. It's a quest just to be "normal." Even big egos can be a way of hiding a sense of inadequacy, or a cry for attention. The Bible's message is quite different. It reminds us that each person is created in God's image, with unique gifts and potential. No one else can make our contribution...or take advantage of our opportunities...or affect the world in just our way. Who knows the difference YOU might make if you were to discover that larger vision?f mind. May you discover that vision.

September 1Unchanging
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
My wife, Cari, and I recently traveled to Santa Barbara, Californiathe city where we met and fell in love thirty-five years agoto attend our college reunion. We planned to visit several places where we had spent some of the best hours of our youth together. But when we arrived at the location of our favorite Mexican restaurant, we found a building supply store there. A wrought iron plaque hung on the wall commemorating the restaurant and its four decades of service to the community.
I gazed on the barren but still familiar sidewalk, once dotted cheerfully with colorful tables and bright umbrellas. So much had changed around us! Yet in the midst of change, Gods faithfulness never changes. David observed poignantly: The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lords love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their childrens children (Psalm 103:1517). David concludes the psalm with these words: Praise the Lord, my soul (v. 22).
The ancient philosopher Heraclitus said, You can never step in the same river twice. Life is always changing around us, but God remains the same and can always be trusted to keep His promises! His faithfulness and love can be counted on from generation to generation.

Reflect & Pray
How is it comforting to know that God never changes? When have you needed that assurance?
Almighty and eternal God, thank You that You never change and can always be trusted. Help me to rely on Your love and faithfulness today.

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.
Psalm 130:7 & 8

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.
May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.
May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.
G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...and a Blessed Lord’s Day and Shavua Tov to you and yours.
We have actually had the sun come out this afternoon. Good news because some of the smoke has cleared out. We had just enough sprinkles to wet the street overnight.
Did you and Penny get out today? You and Blue?

Oh yes. I had a lovely ride on the bike, walked several blocks with Penny, worked on a painting, and practiced my instruments.
A Beautiful Day all around!
I am still praying for some real rain to help out with those fires.

Prayers most appreciated...the fires to the north, that took over 50 homes, are starting to get some containment. The huge fire to the south, over 164,000 acres now, has very little containment, but they are really working hard at keeping it away from the road. We don’t have alternate routes...just one highway going south and one going north.

Thank you for the update!
I am also asking all our FRiends to pray for those in the path of hurricane Dorian.
I’ve been following the thread and it looks awful for our FRiends in the Southeast.
