Men now avoid women at work – another sign we're being punished for #MeToo
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 8/29/2019 | Arwa Mahdawi

It looks like Mike Pence is quite the trendsetter. The US vice-president famously refuses to have dinner alone with any woman who isn’t his wife – and now working men across corporate America appear to be following his lead.

A new study, due to be published in the journal Organizational Dynamics, has found that, following the #MeToo movement, men are significantly more reluctant to interact with their female colleagues. A few highlights from the research include:

• 27% of men avoid one-on-one meetings with female co-workers. Yep, that’s right, almost a third of men are terrified to be alone in a room with a woman.

• 21% of men said they would be reluctant to hire women for a job that would require close interaction (such as business travel).

• 19% of men would be reluctant to hire an attractive woman.

The data above was collected in early 2019 from workers across a wide range of industries. Researchers had asked the same questions (albeit to different people and with more of a focus on future expectations) in early 2018, just as #MeToo was in full swing, and depressingly, things appear to have got worse. In 2018, for example, 15% of men said they would be more reluctant to hire women for jobs that require close interpersonal interactions with women, compared to 21% in 2019.

It’s not just men who are afraid of women, by the way. Women also appear to be increasingly wary of hiring women. The 2018 survey results found that more than 10% of men and women said they expected to be less willing than before to hire attractive women. (Note: the 2019 results for women are not yet public.) ...

As a woman I have also told men if they were out of bounds, or I’ve stayed away from them entirely if they were too handsy. I never went to HR about it but handled things myself. That’s what a grown-up does. Then again, I wasn’t trying to climb any corporate ladders.

I worked a temporary job in Connecticut for ten and a half months. There the office chatting was about personal entertainment. Everyone told each other where they were going to eat out, what movie, concert, or sporting event they had seen, and so on. For example, my cubicle was next to a guy who had season tickets for the NY Yankees, and every time he went to a game, he told us very politely, so we wouldn’t think he was a snob.

A lot of us had jobs where we were working 60-80 hours per week. So where else are you going to meet someone?

Terrified? I say they are smart; very smart.

Maybe she was waiting for the opportunity

She’s divorcing simply based on suspicion

That’s unusual

Or did I read it wrong

Any man who’s heard a woman threaten

“ I’ll take the kids and break you financially you mfer “

I’ve heard that twice and

It wasn’t for cheating or abuse

I worked with a guy who I swear only ever had sex so that he could come to me and brag about it the next morning.

I would have much rather put-up with an arrogant Yankee fan.

It used to be that women and men could work alone together and it was nobody's business if it got sexual or not. Any guy that was a leech developed a reputation rather quickly, and women would avoid them. "Just Say No" to aggressive flirtations did, and still does (from my experience) work just fine.

I believe only a small percentage of the "Me Too" women. That's because there were so many opportunities for easy encounters that men didn't have to make unwelcome advances. The big problem was women who used sexual favors to get unfair advantage on the job.

How did we reach the crazy point society is at now? How does anyone have any fun?

That’s such a great thing.. glad to hear I am not the only one. If it feels wrong, there is every reason to err on the safe side.

Yep, soon as quarters was ending all the smokers would head for the smoke-deck, with me right in the middle of them.
I commented more than once I'll be damned if I'm going to bust my hump while you all are out here cokin’ and smokin’!

Hell, I'd even fly for sodas if some else was buying on occasion.

15 minutes per hour is ridiculous!

My thoughts and observations, your mileage may vary.

Where did that data come from?

My guess: a polling station was set up in a shopping center asking people to participate in a poll on how they deal with women in the workplace.

I think most people that don’t have women-at-work issues wouldn’t bother with the poll. Who does that leave that take the poll?

I think a lot of young white educated men are indeed terrified easily

Have you seen how they look lately?

It’s weird....so feminine and soft..
Nerdy

I was at lunch yesterday and in walks a twentysomething leggy beauty in heels with a man of thick blonde hair

I checked her out ...she smiled like she didn’t mind being admired even though half my age as usual nowadays

The guys from work with her were not gay but so faggy and weak looking white boys

It’s pathetic

I blame parents

How does anyone have any fun?

It starts by recognizing the total absurdity of those who need to pretend that men and women are interchangeable. The differences are the most profound factors in human existence!

****

Exactly! You go to a bar and making an effort to pick up another chick? Stupid. It’s just called “maximizing your time” with the “assets” around you.

Spent a week living in downtown Washington DC recently. Know what you mean.

Hipsters, skinny jeans/pants, perfect hair cuts, dyed hair on and on. All of our waiters were gay men.

I live in rural Appalachia. Men are still men for the most part. It was a big shock.

Sorry about your situation, I know those things occur. But this couple is different. And older.

They have three grown children. They put all three of them through college without assistance. When she told them about the divorce, her son said, “What took you so long?” They’d had a very contentious marriage and hadn’t been happy in decades. Husband was always going places like Alaska with another man whose trips he fully financed. Lots of money missing from their accounts. This is a community property state, and she’s not stupid.

But she put up with it for years because she did NOT want a divorce.

At this point, hubby moved into a very pricey condo WITH THE OTHER MAN. What does that tell you?

My friend, at 60, is better looking than most women ever are. And she’s in no hurry to meet another man. May never.

As a Northern boy, I was always favorably impressed by the fact that if you smiled at a sweet looking young women, South of the Ohio river or the Mason-Dixon line, she would smile back, in a response far more to be cherished than the deliberate avoidance of eye contact, likely to be offered by a pretty young Northern girl. (Of course that was all before the tendency of the potential dears to be in an awareness bubble shield, conjured up with a cell phone.)

Full disclosure: I met my wife at work.

Dating employees was actually against company policy. Which was totally hypocritical because back at the Home Office they were having three weddings a month.

Your post reminds me on these lines from Rudyard Kipling’s poem The Young British Soldier.

“Now, if you must marry, take care she is old “A troop-sergeant’s widow’s the nicest I/m told “For beauty won’t help if your rations are cold, “Nor love ain’t enough for a soldier “Nough, nough, nough for a solder

About the NFL, my annual letters I now include this one for September

Our National Anthem

The Star-Spangled Banner provides the majestic musical/visual symbol of the Constitution I swore to support and defend as a Navy officer. My indefinitely binding oath requires standing for the National Anthem and kneeling to pray for the country.

The NFL, ESPN, And Nike endorse the offense of kneeling when the anthem is played to disparage the country and to support social justice illusions. But veterans understand settling genuine grievances requires revering the essence of our country and trusting in the freedoms it represents.

We are aware that when armed forces members make the ultimate sacrifice they are wrapped in the Star-Spangled Banner in remembrance of freedom. When America’s fallen arrive at Dover Air Force Base from the Middle East their caskets are covered with a Star-Spangled Banner. When they are buried the flag is removed, elegantly folded, and given to a spouse, child, sibling, or parent.

Previously success was defined by marriage, raising kids, career, etc. Now a fashionable consensus defines success around one group adjusting behaviors to validate the emotional damage others have decided to inflict upon themselves for endless perceived slights. The instigators gain a prestige lacking dreams to pursue or accomplishment to celebrate. The subservient parties acquire costless moral superiority by holding themselves and the country in disgust.

I will always choose success through the hazards and uncertainties of personal freedom over sheltering within codependent relationships. This country needs “a new birth of freedom” to remain faithful to the Constitution as the embodiment of the American ideal.
