A Facebook campaign ad from an upstate New York countys Republican Party has been slammed as anti-Semitic and deeply disturbing.
Titled A storm is brewing in Rockland, the video takes aim at the large and growing hasidic Jewish community in the county, the specter of overdevelopment and a proposed yeshiva campus.
The video, which appeared to have been removed on Thursday morning, features menacing music, the slogan If They Win, We Lose and a warning that they will change our way of life.
Aron Wieder and his Ramapo bloc are plotting a takeover, the video intones, referring to a Hasidic legislator representing a Rockland County town with a large Orthodox population. The ad warns that chaotic development and redistricting threaten our home, schools, families and water.
This video is deeply disturbing....denounce this hateful video.
The Republican Party chairman in Rockland County, Lawrence Garvey, defended the video in a Facebook post on the partys page.
Regardless of your thoughts of the video, there are facts that cannot be ignored. This is not, nor has it ever been a religious issue. It is an issue of right and wrong, he wrote. For those not living in Rockland, it is harder to see a real and unique problem that exists here. The people of Rockland have become desperate for attention to the problems facing our communities and many live every day with the threat of losing their homes and neighborhoods.
Anyone who dares speak up about overdevelopment, corruption, or education is immediately labeled as anti-Semitic without any concern for facts or without any idea of the true issues at hand.
The Republican Jewish Coalition in a tweet called the video absolutely despicable and pure anti-Semitism.

Fascinating that the Republicans get immediately attacked and frplatformed for insinuations of anti-semitism but actual anti-semifinal by Democrats not only remains but is defended and celebrated.
And you live in upstate New York?
Or did you abandon and forsake America?
From what I read, there’s a lot more going on in that county than what’s being reported. Becoming members of the community is not the problem. Sounds like local govt., education, redistricting and development are heavily being effected quickly and the locals are afraid. If it was my county, I would also be worried. Discussions must follow before changes are made. It’s that simple.
I’d take a Hasidic takeover over a muslim takeover anytime.
And knowing that, one would think a Republican in a state that doesnt like Republicans would check himself before making a remark like that.
I grew up in an area close to there. Hasidic Jews don’t support Israel and they misuse the benefits system. They take over an area and drive property values down. They also vote in a bloc so the politicians pander to them. It’s a disgrace.
Even Israel has big issues with the Haredi separatism.
Its anti-American separatism, inside the US.
Its not the Jewish faith at issue, but the supporters always throw that crapola against the wall to see if itcsticks. Drive through any area and see for yourself. THAT’S why thinking people object. It destroys entire areas, communities, the tax base and polical representation.
5 or 6 thousand block voting in a local election. You do the math.
Its the corruption, bribery, food stamp and medicaid explosion thats the problem
The peoblem, and it already exists on Long Island in The Five Towns involves the schools. Hasidics send their kids to Yeshivas as is their right, but they run for and win control of the local school boards where they can limit spending, lower school taxes, direct spending like repair and transportation to fellow Hasidics and create a sense that the schools are in need of improvement, prompting non hasidics to sell, oftrn for cash to other hasidics. The animosity is not simply one of appearance and eruv wires but of totally changing a community via legal but disturbing means.
Good point. On the other hand, I have yet to see a Hasidic community in the U.S. where I would want to live even if you paid all my living expenses.
Psalm 141:3 Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
Politicians ought to pray that prayer daily. So should we all.
Any (R) person should know this, too: (D) persons’ faux pas are “inartful”; (R) persons’ faux pas are Nazi.
that this krap is coming from a republican is extra-distressing....98 percent of the time its from the commie/nazi leftists..
no matter,
the gop needs to clean this act up, now!
I wish I could see the ad instead of just accepting this articles characterization of it at face value. Nothing that is quoted in the article is anti-Semitic in any way, and the anti-development sentiment portrayed here is something youll find in almost any suburban town within 50 miles of New York City.
That’s it in a nutshell, as you say. I am Chassidic, though I live in Israel so am not involved in this. I think some hard-headed diplomacy and some tact are what’s needed on both sides. The Rockland County residents do have their legitimate grievances, and the Chassidim can accomplish what they need to thrive without a hostile takeover of the whole Rockland County. But this ad and the knee-jerk reaction to it are both going to make the needed detente harder to initiate. Both sides do have their respective leaders, and the job of leaders is to practice the art of the deal for everyone’s benefit.
“I’d take a Hasidic takeover over a Muslim takeover anytime.”
Agreed. Though Idk about this particular dispute, I do remember a large community of Hasidic Jews in NYC.
Very quiet, civilized people. Low key, noticeable only by their unique clothing & forelocks. Self sufficient, prosperous business people who provide well for their families; they don’t demand handouts.
They don’t try to force their customs on anyone else. You’ll never see them assaulting others, or taking over city streets, disrupting traffic to pray with butts in the air.
And in huge contrast to Muslims, they’re grateful to be in America & have no desire to destroy us.
We need to understand, “America” isn’t defined by white people who speak only English, fast food, twerking pop stars, cheesy strip malls & Las Vegas neon.
It’ much more than that.
We DO have room under the American umbrella for a variety of ethnicities & cultural heritages— this is what makes America unique— providing they want to be Americans, not kill Americans.
And ‘takeovers’ of any kind are harsh and breed animosity. Cooperation, negotiation and agreement are what’s needed.
I hear that those Jews are actually reproducing, unlike many others.
The Hasidic folks do not build integrated communities with the broader communities they settle in.
The are standoffish and do not mix in most any otherwise natural way with non-Hassidic neighbors.
I have had three different Hassidic families over the years, occupying 1/2 of a two family house with a common driveway between my house and their unit.
They never ever speak to be unless I speak first. They do nothing with and have nothing to do with any of our non-Hasidic neigbors, not even our non-Hasidic Jewish neighbors.
They have many of their homes declared synagogues and every Hasidic man wants to be a Rabbi with his own little group. We - all our neighbors - have been at pains for years to find out how many of Hasidim’s homes are exempt in any way from the property taxes. Yes, I know, THEIR kids are not taking up seats in the public schools anyway.
Still, what the Hasidim really want is their own community, and as they cannot usually buy a whole community at once, they just keep buying near other Hasidim so that gradually they dominate a street, a neighborhood, a town.
One of the ways they abuse their dominance in very otherwise mixed areas is in land use. In the town but up next to mine, there is s street that has forever been the mid point - running north and south - of a always nothing but residential area. Some blocks east & west of that mid point, the neighborhood is bounded by avenues with some residential and some non-residential land use. But never ever has anything but residence been in the very middle of the neighborhood.
A group of Hasdim kept pressing the city for years to build a synagogue & mens public bath on a large residential lot on the mid point avenue. Neihgborhood groups always protested as ANY such building, built for ANY institutional outfit, including ANY religious outfit, would change the very heart of that residential area for good.
Finally the stupid city officials caved under the threat of a “religious discrimination” lawsuit, and the Hasidim got their permit. Many long time residents - Christians, non-Hasidic Jews, non-religious have been selling or planning to sell. For the Hssidim THAT is no problem, that is what they want, the realtors have told folks in that neighborhood for years that all they have to do is decide to sell and the realtor can get their house sold in days. The Hasidim want to congregate together so much they will easily outbid non-Hasidim on a house for sale in the area.
In my experience the Hasidim are very much like the Amish, only unlike the Amish they want your land, your houses, your stores so they can all be together, by default, and without you in the way - cause you are not part of their community and they have no intention of integrating in anyway with yours.
Meanwhile, I owe my life to an Orthodox Hasidic Rabbi, and I still speak to him often enough and have no prejudice towards him or his faith.
But how the Hssidim want to live does not include “integrating” in a religiously mixed community. That’s just the facts as I have experienced them. And THAT mode is unsettling to everyone else, and rightly so.
A Hasidic takeover would mean peace & harmony. I’m all for it. [Disclosure: I am Jewish]
