(CNN) United Airlines is suspending daily service from Chicagos OHare International Airport to Hong Kong starting next month, the company confirmed to CNN Saturday.
While our service between the United States and HKG (Hong Kong) remains a vital part of our network, we have decided to suspend service between ORD (Chicago) and HKG after the return flight from HKG on Sept. 9, 2019, the company said in a statement.
United Airlines did not cite the ongoing protests in Hong Kong as a reason to cancel the direct route. Instead, the airline said that it has seen a reduced demand for travel from Chicago. Despite the suspension between Chicago and Hong Kong, United remains the largest U.S. airline to HKG, the company added.

There are other carriers which fly in and out of Hong Kong.
FWIW, I had already decided, after my husband’s flight via United from Chicago, to give United a pass altogether. They erred in their baggage handling and onboard service. US carriers already toward the bottom of my list in regard to international travel and United has just, since early this month, fallen off the list altogether. It ranks down there with China Southern.
United doesn’t want to fly half-full planes. They’ll just force him to transfer in other cities
UA does not want to cross Xi.
Just less passengers for UA to beat up and drag off the plane.
The media has really over played the stuff going on in HK.
Look up Nury Vittachi a somewhat truthful journalist based IN Hong Kong.
The Western press does not understand the situation because they are “multiculturalist” they they that all cultures are equal and thus the same.
Your son will be fine. Hong kong is still safer than ANY city in the US

The problem is that most of the world gets their news from CNN. It is FAKE!
Maybe UAL decided Chicago is too dangerous.
It will continue to be safer, right up to the point when it isn’t.
Just saying...
I can’t help you with your son, but overall, unless forced to, taking a US carrier to Asia, at least as a guy, is PURE STUPIDITY.
Spok-u r FUNNY!
Maybe UAL decided Chicago is too dangerous.
Lol! Or, maybe Hong Kong decided Chitcacago is too dangerous.
Yep. He'll likely have to fly to LAX first then to ORD.
Most people really don't realize some of the pretty thin margins the airlines operate on. These days if a plane isn't full / over-booked by 20% the airline loses money.
The airlines purposely over-book because they know a certain percentage will miss flights/re-book before their flight and don't want open seats.
Taking a US carrier to Europe is pure stupidity. British Airways, Air France, and Luftansa, plus, possibly, some others have a really great coach plus service that costs about 70% more than coach, gives much more leg room, and a seat that’s pretty much the equivalent of domestic US first class. Really well worth the money.
My oldest son lives and works in Hong Kong. This is the flight he takes to come home and visit. I’m starting to really worry
This flight has long been a marginal performer for United. It is better served from Los Angeles or San Francisco.
The drop in Business/ first class traffic must be noticeable enough for UA to say enough...
Perhaps people from Hong Kong were getting too afraid to land in war torn Chicago.
Chicago, aka Chiraq. Ha.
I remember when UAL flew a 747-SP on that route. The’d fill it up until fuel came out the overflow.
