Razor brand Gillette says it is shifting the spotlight from social issues to local heroes after an ad delving into toxic masculinity caused a customer backlash.
The new ad, which launched last week, stars Australian firefighter and personal trainer Ben Ziekenheiner. Ive been a firefighter for 19 years, Mr Ziekenheiner says in the ad.
People sometimes ask if its scary. It can be, but like anyone who has a job to do, you prepare not just in terms of your equipment but also mentally and physically.
The ad spruiks the brands SkinGuard range, highlighting the issue of sensitive skin for men who shave every day including firefighters, who are required to be clean-shaven as it enables a proper seal for their breathing mask.
We have a very clear strategy when it comes to how we authentically connect with our consumers, said Manu Airan, associate brand director for Gillette Australia and New Zealand.
We will continue to talk about what is important to Gillette and that is representing men at their best and helping men do their best. That is not changing. We will continue to do that and demonstrate it in different ways.

Hey guys! Come back! You know that whole thing where we called you sexist pigs and your sons rapists in training? We were KIDDING! Now buy our razors again. Please.
F ‘em. Just like the NFL, NO going back.
I don’t believe Gillette.
Get woke, go broke.
Market to freaks and you get what you deserve.
Fuqum. Sales lost forever
Gillette CEO must have seen this on youtube

Gillette razors are for Pajama Boys—to use in shaving their legs.
I agree this is insincere. They had a chance to walk it back right after the VP of Marketing for Gillette created and okayed it. The parent company, Procter and Gamble, CEO came out endorsing the ad fully and doubling down on the Virtue Signaling by talking more toxic masculinity.
Eat S and Die is what I say. No more Gillette as of six months ago and no more P&G as of six months ago.
Can you imagine the fate of the little sissy Gillette fast tracked who destroyed their market.
I’d like to introduce you to our new VP of Product Development...
You may know him as pajama boy... Christopher Farage’
They’re coming out with a Soy based shave cream to take up the slack.
How much longer until they stop making Gillette products because no self-respecting man will buy them?
Assuming that there is a shrinking market for razors, how much sense did it make for a company to alienate a huge group of men who still shave, thereby steering them to their competitors? I would think that Gillette, knowing that the market is shrinking, would fight like hell to hold on to what it has. Gillette voluntarily drove away customers in an already shrinking market, and those people aren't coming back.
Gillette can go to hell. I will never use their products again.
Oops, too little too late. Bought Schick today.
I bet this has downstream impact on other P&G products as well. I saw lots of people passing around lists of P&G products to boycott.
Schick razors and barbasol for me. FOAD Gillette poofers.
