The Danish royal family was surprised after President Trump scrapped a planned visit to Denmark following comments by the country's prime minister that the idea the U.S. might buy Greenland from them was absurd.
Trump had been expected to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of his trip to Europe, but until his tweets Tuesday, there were no solid indications the visit was centered on buying Greenland.
"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksens comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump wrote.
The White House later clarified that the entire trip to Denmark had been scrapped, including a planned meeting with Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.
The cancellation of the visit left the Danish royal family flabbergasted, while other politicians said the snub was deeply insulting.
It [the cancellation] was a surprise -- we have nothing more to say about this case, said Lene Balleby, head of communications for the Danish royal family.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former prime minister, tweeted that Trump's cancellation was deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark, while ex-foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told Danish broadcaster TV2 that the situation was a diplomatic farce and slammed Trump for grotesque behavior.
Total chaos, the former finance minister Kristian Jensen wrote. This has gone from a great opportunity for a strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.
Pernille Skipper, the speaker of Parliaments leftist red-green alliance, tweeted that Trump lives on another planet, adding that hes smug and disrespectful.

I got a what if for everyone...could china have been trying to broker a deal behind the scene for access to resources and construction of a military base with Denmark and trump talking about making a deal with Denmark make such a deal politicly impossible to happen because now the public in Denmark is watching what its politicians are doing.
Certainly a plausible possibility. The Chinese have been making overtures to the government of Greenland. The Chinese want to establish a presence in Greenland.
You left out Camp Lejeune, Harvey Point Defense Testing Activity and the Port of Wilmington/U.S. Coast Guard/Sector North Carolina.
Ohe question - can the US actually purchase greenland? I thought GL was a self-governing entity - an independent country in many ways. So a vote would be needed among the people there at the very least, right? I don’t know, but I think it can’t be like the Louisiana purchase
I not read anything about what native Greenlanders think.
And they are already quasi-independent. The local population - numbering only thousands - are happy enough as Danes as they get hand-outs from Denmark and Denmark leaves them alone.
As far as I know, it isn’t for Denmark to “sell” - rather the locals have had the option to vote for independence for some time now, so I guess they can have the option to vote to join another entity
“The Danes approached PDJT back channel for a sale, to fill their socialist program depleted national coffers.”
They did?
I thought they had good reserves at $60b on a yearly budget of $7b
you are correct. Greenlanders can vote to join the USA. If the USA offers a cast-iron deal for the next x years on so much $$.
Denmark would also be sad-happy but not make a fuss.
The Louisiana purchase was simply buying land from one owner. The locals had no say.
Greenland is different as it is quasi-independent.
And, the secretive Special Forces exercises held concurrently in 21 NC counties here recently:

When POTUS calls 911, it rings in North Carolina.
Breaking up the USA, worse than breaking up the EU :)
Because we allow free mobility across state lines, the “Balkan-ization” of the USA is happening daily as people pick up and move to a state that fits their sensibilities.
At some point, the blue states will become deep, deep blue and hopeless. Then, the new borders will become obvious.
Also part of this “let it happen on purpose” (LIHOP) plan is to allow states to fragment into smaller states, such as California and New York.
People are voting with their feet. I do not think there will be a hot CWII.
I thought they had good reserves at $60b on a yearly budget of $7b>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The problem is that they know the reserve is a book entry on projected tax based income, about to decline as the European Union economy tanks. The socialist model of Denmark is about to crash. The Dane’s agricultural, fishing and entrepreneurial classes are not so attached to socialism, and it is they who foresee a complete disintegration of the fragile socialist model.
The Danish military also knows that the Russians are on the move, and intend to use Greenland to expand back into the Baltic, playing the slow creeping came in the Arctic. Many Danes want to see an increased strategic presence of NATO in Greenland , and one way to get that is to simply ket America own the territory. It would expand the development of mining and fishing in Greenland, and increase the presence of the US Navy in the region to check Russian strategic and economic advances.
President Trump is not making silly here. He is simply positioning America to obtain Greenland as cheaply as possible, by putting the continuing back room negotiations into a higher pressure situation for the Danes.
I would love to see our country own Greenland. We could eventually have a direct effect of putting European socialism back in its stinking garbage bin.
Thank you for your insightful reply! It makes sense that the Danish PM would try to downplay fears, but you are correct — she went too far. The jeering was like Trump’s 2015 announcement that he would run for president — widespread mocking, accusations that is is a clown, knows nothing, et cetera.
Yesterday’s DailyMail got in and stirred the disrespect with a cheapshot articke, after which thousands of comments labelec from US, UK, Europe and Australia were hissing, sneering and booing — however, since their comment section is still surprisingly accessible and is one of the most popular in the English-speaking world, it is often infiltrated by clickfarm activity from Russia and US bots, trying to shape opinion.
You mentioned an “elevator manifest” — did that mean an recommendation of how US personnel should act or speak literally in an anticipated elevator ride to the meeting in the Vatican visit?
In addition, Sen Tom Cotton is quoted in USA Today stating the talks to purchase Greenland have been going on for quite some time.
Gosh, sorry about all the misspellings in my post. Was lying down at the time!!!
Not to worry, it was a great post from a stand up guy.
Hey now we gave the Indians $18.00 worth of beads.
Fixed it!
No, we gave the indians' Chief $18.00 worth of beads.
