Danish royal family 'surprised,' lawmakers fume as Trump cancels Denmark visit over Greenland

The Danish royal family was “surprised” after President Trump scrapped a planned visit to Denmark following comments by the country's prime minister that the idea the U.S. might buy Greenland from them was “absurd.”

Trump had been expected to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of his trip to Europe, but until his tweets Tuesday, there were no solid indications the visit was centered on buying Greenland.

"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump wrote.

The White House later clarified that the entire trip to Denmark had been scrapped, including a planned meeting with Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.

The cancellation of the visit left the Danish royal family flabbergasted, while other politicians said the snub was “deeply insulting.”

“It [the cancellation] was a surprise -- we have nothing more to say about this case,” said Lene Balleby, head of communications for the Danish royal family.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former prime minister, tweeted that Trump's cancellation was “deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark,” while ex-foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told Danish broadcaster TV2 that the situation was “a diplomatic farce” and slammed Trump for “grotesque” behavior.

“Total chaos,” the former finance minister Kristian Jensen wrote. “This has gone from a great opportunity for a strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.”

Pernille Skipper, the speaker of Parliament’s leftist red-green alliance, tweeted that Trump “lives on another planet,” adding that he’s “smug and disrespectful.”

Priggishness and stupidity are terrible burdens.

Perhaps. You, however, lie with breathtaking ease.

North Carolina• Net federal funding: $3,358 per resident• Total revenue from fed. gov.: $113.1 billion (9th most)• SNAP benefit recipiency: 12.3 percent (tied - 19th highest)• Median household income: $52,752 (13th lowest)

Looks like a money pit to me. Maybe we can sell them to China?

The productive people in NC would be glad to secede (again) or Balkan-ize.

Also, NC has 321,000 illegal aliens that account for a big piece of the net negative Federal “subsidy”. (10 years ago, that number was said to be 250K. I think 321K is low...)

If you have read the Art of the Deal you would understand what likely is going on. Denmark has no ability to continue its colonial holding of Greenland against a hostile takeover. Trump is opening the Negotiations by seeking to buy it outright. Denmark doesn’t want to sell it, but is in no position to keep it. Trump will ultimately make an offer they can’t refuse and which will save face for Denmark. The USA will purchase a 100 year lease of the entire island. The residents can apply for US citizenship. At the end of 100 years the residents can vote to extend the lease for another 100 years or vote to stay with Denmark or cede control to the US.

The US cannot allow for a hostile takeover. The Danes have no power to prevent it. They can sell it or lease it to the USA or they can give it to the Russians or Chinese.

Greenland has a Chinese angle to it. These things don’t all of a sudden happen. Trump is interested in China because China is interested in Greenland.

Greenland is in play, The Royals are talking to the Chinese and won’t talk to us. He should walk.

Danish pastries are actually HUNGARIAN specialties called "delkeral". The name was changed during WW I, because Americans were boycotting ALL products ( yes, even those made here, by fellow Americans, by people who had been here for at least 2 generations, but had German last names/were ethnically from a nation that was siding withe Germany, though AMERICAN CITIZENS! )and worse!

So go ahead and enjoy a DELKEL, be it lekvar ( prune )turos ( cheese, or cherry; there's absolutely nothing "DANISH" about these delights.

Yep. Can't win a debate with facts and truth so you resort to vulgar imagery.

More proof you're a died-in-the-wool socialist democrap.

Don’t worry. You can stay where you are.

Have fun reading this (from a leftist point of view). There are many articles about Balkan-izing the USA.

I’m in.

And the fact that you can not laugh at that image proves my point. You sir are an insufferable prig... The kind of man that grandchildren dread visiting, dogs avoid and a wife leaves for the mail man.

I apologize for my probably contribution to fake news.

The cancellation of the visit left the Danish royal family flabbergasted, while other politicians said the snub was “deeply insulting.”

The royal family should reign in Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen - explain that a simple 'no' works better than running to the press to mock the President of the United States. Guess he wanted a talking invite to MSNBC...

Sudbury is an iron, nickel, copper, silver, and platinum metals mines operation prospering for over 100 years. We know of such a deposit on the coast near Thule that is one-quarter as extensive, plus has gold in the mix.

Would require an investment which neither Denmark, nor their local petitioners, intend to make for their development. It’s under thick ice, but there is former U.S. military engineering experience working with such conditions.

Other discussions of mineral wealth have spoken of the more accessible deposits. Presumably the locals have not, or are prevented by Danish policy from developing these finds.
