Trump called NRA chief to tell him universal background checks are off the table

President Trump called National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre on Tuesday to tell him that universal background checks for gun purchases are off the table, The Atlantic reported.

The decision to oppose an initiative that has strong support in public polling signals an apparent backtracking by the president from initial comments he made following two mass shootings earlier this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, that left 31 dead.

Trump at the time indicated support for legislation on “meaningful background checks,” saying the issue was not a question of the NRA or political partisanship.

“On background checks, we have tremendous support for really common-sense, sensible, important background checks,” Trump told reporters on Aug. 9 following the shootings.

However, Trump reportedly no longer supports the initiative.

“He was cementing his stance that we already have background checks and that he’s not waffling on this anymore,” a source told The Atlantic with regard to Trump's phone call with LaPierre on Tuesday. “He doesn’t want to pursue it.”

DJT frequently makes public statements to then see what his base and the rest poll on a subject.

Sounds like someone who doesn't know what he believes.

how did The Atlantic know he called and what the topic was?
The right decision but their are still spies in his network.

Because day to day life goes on in politics city. Trading information and tips is a basic part of that work scene and culture. One day Trump will be gone but people in the political culture have to find jobs and be able to tap into the gossip network or they are finished. The only fairly big name DC personality that voluntarily walked away, that I can remember, is George Gilder, when after the end of the Cold War bought into the end of history trope and turned the Spectator into an IT and computer magazine. I guess he did pretty well after a really rocky start.

What about the Red Flag law that he said he supported and that Congress is drafting?

Just saw PDJT’s statement on Dobbs. Excellent. (Also, I like his tie.)

Liberals don’t want Mental Illness considered as it will lead to stigmatization of the poor souls suffering from the same affliction that constantly afflicts Liberals!!!

... that of all the so-called “mass” shootings in recent years, none of them involved firearms that were purchased from a private seller.

There will be a rash of such shootings, as soon as "they" get wind of this.

A new bone for the media.....Pelosi and Schumer will be disappointed that the President doesn't care about saving lives.

Now let's talk about abortion.

“And how did The Atlantic know he called and what the topic was?”

Good question. The source was specifically singing to the Atlantic, not the NY Slimes..

I knew he wasn’t going to stab us in the back. That’s why I didn’t bother reading or responding to all the doom mongers who said he would.

The Donkey’s just want to capitalize on panic/fear/outrage after some lunatic has killed a bunch of people. That’s why they always try to push their chitty politics immediately without even waiting for the corpses to grow cold. All you have to do is stall. Then the emotion subsides and people start thinking more rationally again.

I dont have to go through background checks, BUT that is because I had to let them crawl up my ass with a microscope and a sifter when I applied for my carry permit.

He’s only opposing Universal Background Checks to get votes.

But we perpetual cynics (and trolls) here know better because we all know that there is NO DIFFERENCE between the parties and if Trump holds strong against background checks, it’s not because he means it, it’s because he simply wants votes.

We’re not dumb won’t be fooled!

IMHO, the only Red Flag bill that PDJT will agree to is one that guarantees due process (pre-accused confronts accuser in court before any seizure takes place) and mandates that false accusations result in harsh penalties including prison time, fines, and paying of all court costs.

Democraps will choke on that as will Flimsey Grahamnesty, the little bastard RINO.

FWIW: the last ninety Red Flag denunciations in CA resulted in 89 being dismissed by a judge. You now have 89 disarmed gun owners trying to get their property back.
