On the eve of World War II, the Republican Party was a shell of the one that had dominated presidential politics from the Civil War through the onset of the Great Depression.
Two individuals saved the GOP and made it relevant again.
Dwight Eisenhower ran on an internationalist platform in 1952, favoring foreign aid to Europe, the new military alliance called NATO and an aggressive stance against Soviet Communism, thereby asserting U.S. world leadership. He vanquished his isolationist foe, Sen. Robert Taft, for the GOP nomination in 1952 and then won the first Republican presidential victory in 20 years.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan sought to move the GOP beyond its narrow confines in the Northeast and Midwest. He built on Eisenhowers internationalism, preaching limited government, free markets and supply-side economics policies designed to bring prosperity to ALL Americans, not just the well-connected.
Two signature issues restricting immigration and trade have pushed back on 60 years of Republican orthodoxy and dramatically changed the partys image and focus.
Trade policy is the first example. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), designed to marginalize China, has been shelved. Speaking of China, we are on the verge of a full-blown trade war with no end in sight and no clear end game. Presidential adviser Peter Navarro is an unabashed admirer of tariffs and believes they have contributed to our strong economy.
Most economists and virtually all CEOs would disagree.

The article is pure nonsense.
Nixon expanded the GOP geographically, not Reagan. Many other silly and wrong assumptions.
You are right and RINOS protest too much.
Whoever wrote this needs to follow Jeremiah Johnson and head for the hills.
I used to say illegal immigration is behind everything. Now it’s China and illegals.
Nonsense.
Time for the GOP to ditch RINOS like Donatelli.
Yes many others. Public was upset with Korea war for one. Too many commies in Truman admin for another.
Ho hum. And you can look up in newspaper archives online from about 1982 or thereabouts and there are ones like David Gergen concerned about the far right turn Reagan allegedly took that was going to cost the GOP a great deal.
PLEASE. ####ing traitors.
and an Italian like me, no less.
I hate backstabbers.
Why is it dems didn’t come out of the woodwork to say that Obama is awful and needs to be dumped.
A TRAITOR who sold us out a dozen times over!
Is Donatelli a big time lobbyist for wealthy interests? Im not saying, Im asking.
He is an establishment type like McCain and Flake.
Time for FOX to dump it’s anti-Trump deep state reporters and commentators and go back to being fair and balanced reporting of the facts.
You are spot on. Republicans line up in a circle, ready, fire.
I am convinced that if tariffs were not a Trump issue, the Murdoch run Fox would seek and find some pundit who would pick on some other Trump issue, just to pick on some Trump issue - period. That’s what the Murdochs want to do.
Am I all in on tariffs? No. I do not think tariffs will cause the Chinese dictators to either reform the Chinese economy from a dictatorship run mercantilist nationalist state-capitalism party-crony run economy, nor do I think tariffs will appreciably alter the net balance of trade with China; regardless of how much Trump thinks either of those things can be achieved with the cudgel of tariffs.
But if my vote is between Fox corp (the Murdochs) and Trump, Trump would still get my vote.
What a steaming pile of crap. Trump revived a GOP that was going the way of the Whig party. Economic nationalism and a return to defending American workers are what got Trump elected. The political class has become disconnected from the people. And it is happening throughout the developed world.
Perhaps, but DDE was a fair President at best. He was extraordinarily fortunate to become President when all the planets aligned and ALL was right with the US.
He inherited a robust post war economy at a time when the vast majority of Americans were fat and happy. The middle class was exploding, industry was at it’s zenith and trade unions had not exploited their power as they would do into the 60’s and beyond.
The 50’s were arguably the single best decade this country has ever experienced and it had actually very little to do with who was President at the time.
Not sure who Mr. Donatelli is, but he has a HUGE hole in his memory. Maybe he forgot that people like Dole, McCain and Romney were losers. Maybe he forgets that the MSM will eat traditional Republicans alive, especially those who never push back or fight.
In order to win, the Republican party has to morph. Going back in time won’t work.
This article is pure propaganda nonsense designed to reach all the serfs who, since the 1970's, were raised and brain-washed in government schools... Every one of them will definitely believe this nonsense...
Time for the GOP to die and be swept into the dustbin of history.
