President Trump said Tuesday that the United States already has “very strong background checks” for gun purchasers and that officials need to be wary of the prospect of a “slippery slope” where “everything gets taken away.”
Trump’s comments to reporters in the Oval Office provided more evidence that he is backtracking after initially expressing support for enhanced background checks following a pair of mass shootings that killed 31 earlier this month.
His comments foretelling a “slippery slope” also closely mirrored the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) long-held argument that even modest gun control regulations would inevitably lead to more stringent ones.
Trump echoed his own comments earlier this week by claiming that background checks are already strong, though he added a caveat that there are “missing areas” without going into further detail.

Trump is doing what trump does. Second guessing him is a fool’s game.
Depriving law abiding citizens who have committed no crimes of their civil rights is not a slippery slope.

I noticed the change over the weekend. I thought maybe he was going to tie it to immigration. If so then things could get messy. That said if he tied it to a “real Id”(for voting etc.) for everyone in the US then it would not get the Dems to go along. But for now he seems to be focused on mental illness.

I am STILL hoping & praying that PDJT declares that everyone must inhale and exhale on a regular, natural basis.

I fully support our President and I hope he is getting the message. If he signs ANY gun control bill he will not be President in 2020. It’s absolute certain defeat. He lost a half a million votes (likely a lot more)by pushing the bumpstock ban for which he gained absolutely zero political capitol.
Trump is very good at this. Promise the moon, then back off when the shootings are out of the news. the American people are smarter than the media thinks, and soon get back to their regular lives within 2 weeks.
What’s enhanced mean? Getting a note from mom saying it’s okay to buy that AR?
To add: Will a vet have to get a note from the VA saying they’re mentally sound to purchase a firearm?
