Two of Russias nuclear radiation monitoring stations went silent two days after a mysterious explosion that led to a radiation spike in northern Russia earlier this month.
Russian officials say at least five nuclear engineers were killed during a rocket test involving isotope power sources on a platform in the White Sea, leading to outside speculation that the accident involved a nuclear-powered cruise missile. Four international stations designed to monitor nuclear activity had detected an event coinciding with the [Aug. 8] explosion in Nyonoksa, Russia, the worlds main nuclear test-ban body said on Aug. 10.
The Dubna and Kirov stations told the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) they were experiencing communication and network issues shortly after the explosion, its chief Lassina Zerbo told The Wall Street Journal.
The two stations are part of an international network of more than 300 stations set up to verify compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). They are the closest Russian stations to the Arkhangelsk region where the blast took place.
We are pending further reports on when the stations or the communication system will be restored to full functionality, Zerbo was quoted as saying Sunday.
Daryl Kimball, the head of the Arms Control Association NGO, called the data disruption a very odd coincidence.

There were airplane nuclear engine designs built and tested and the concept was discontinued. You can view one of the test engines in Idaho at the EBR-1 Historical exhibit. The reasons for abandoning the idea are many. I think the Russians may have found out why our attempts are a museum exhibit now. The fuel was graphite moderated, some was never used. The fuel was recovered to some extent. If you crash a nuclear plane how do you clean up the mess. Just saying.
They did the very same in 1950s and abandoned it too. Probably a second thought now but I have no idea.
Gee, why would the Russians try to withhold evidence of yet another nuclear accident? They’ve never done that before have they? /s
Messes dont matter ever since Fukushima. So party on Garth. Apparently... Expecting India and Pakistan to light em up soon.

Full Title: President Putin says five men killed in huge explosion in northern Russia that caused sudden radiation spike died trying to create a weapon that has no equal in the world
Russian President Vladimir Putin has told widows of the five scientists who died in a nuclear explosion earlier this year that their husbands were working on ‘the most advanced and unmatched technical’ weaponry.
Putin’s comments came during a ceremony of state decorations at the Kremlin today where he awarded the deceased employees of Russia’s state nuclear company with the Order of Courage, posthumously.

Thanks
There are regimes out there which would not care about side effects, as long as they get a military advantage.
“What is the price of lies?”
Thanks for the ping.
Weve already tried the nuclear airplane stuff. The nuclear engines are sitting in Idaho at the old EBR 1 site. Someone finally realized the point you just mentioned. If its a rocket as in ICBM and your nuking another country, who cares about crash cleanup.
