If I believed this film could incite violence, I wouldnt have made it, he wrote in an email to Variety.
He also said he was devastated by the shootings and agreed with the decision to not release the film after he said it had been misinterpreted.
I was devastated by going to sleep to El Paso and waking up to Dayton, Craig Zobel said. These types of moments happen far too often. In the wake of these horrific events, we immediately considered what it meant for the timing of our film. Once inaccurate assumptions about the content and intent of the movie began to take hold, I supported the decision to move the film off its release date.
The director insisted the film had been misunderstood and that it was supposed to show what happens when both sides of the political spectrum fail to listen or try to understand one another.
He said he did not think it took sides against conservatives.
"Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally, Zobel told Variety.
I wanted to make a fun, action thriller that satirized this moment in our culture where we jump to assume we know someones beliefs because of which team we think theyre on ... and then start shouting at them," he told Variety. This rush to judgment is one of the most relevant problems of our time.

Exactamundo. I agree.
In the original script, it's the liberal elite who are the bad guys.
In the end, the good guys, the Conservatives, win.
His character hunted Criminals, not Political enemies.
Of course, Liberals think we are Criminals for supporting POTUS Trump.
Ah, no we haven’t “misunderstood” anything; your desire, and the communist leftists which you represent want to strip us of our constitutional right to defend ourselves, ENCARCERATE US and HUNT US DOWN and KILL US F O R S P O R T because we are conservitive, white, American CITIZENS who love America, and support the POTUS, and the rule of law.
We got the intended message of your film loud and clear!
“His character hunted Criminals, not Political enemies.”
For me, criminals=liberals. Que serra.
We Conservatives possess something the modern day Liberals lack, Morality.
We would no more hunt down Liberals simply for their ignorant Beliefs than we would hunt down Puppies.
This is a Comcast production fact.
Which conservatives, exactly, support the censorship of this film? I have read criticism of the premise, but no calls for banning the release. Maybe I missed them. Can you point me in the right direction? For that matter, what government agency is censoring the film in any way?
Just reacting to both Posters here on FR and the outrage of Conservative Media Pundits when this first surfaced a few weeks ago.
Not that difficult to find if you look.
Sure you were, craig. You were devastated. /s
So I guess the answer is no one. I’ve read not a single call for censorship.
The director was completely "out of touch" with where the American public is and now he's back-trackin' as fast as he can.
Translation- We lost our asses on this cynical piece of schlock.
Year or so it will go to video.
Yeeeeaaah! Showed BOTH sides. But only ONE side was hunted down and killed! Typical lib BS.
People here and in the Conservative Media saying the Movie should not be released for whatever reason are supporting Censorship. How dare they make this, blah, blah, blah.
Granted, it is not endorsing Government Censorship. That would only happen if Democrats disliked the Movie Plot, which is why I asked what would be happening if the “Hunted’ were Liberals instead of Conservatives.
What struck me about all the initial FR Comments attacking the Movie was the fact that in the end the “Hunted” Conservatives won.
We have a Free Market System. Let that decide the fate of the Movie. If they lose their A$$, the Movie will be the last of its kind.
In my response to him I say but 5 words, You Sir are a Liar!
>>>Yeeeeaaah! Showed BOTH sides. But only ONE side was hunted down and killed! Typical lib BS<<<
No, in the end the “Hunters” ended up being the Hunted.
Wolverines!
Yep, that’s what I got out of it, and the movie had a liberal helping of “You’re Next” besides. I was looking forward to this one myself just because the “deplorable push back” is usually entertainingly gruesome. Wish they would have just released it and let the chips fall where they may.
First it shows what we have always known; liberal elites are targeting conservatives and Trump voters.

The problem with Liberals who have wet dreams about eradicating we Deplorables is that we have the guns, knowledge, and will to win any such venture.
