“If I believed this film could incite violence, I wouldn’t have made it,” he wrote in an email to Variety.
He also said he was devastated by the shootings and agreed with the decision to not release the film after he said it had been misinterpreted.
“I was devastated by going to sleep to El Paso and waking up to Dayton,” Craig Zobel said. “These types of moments happen far too often. In the wake of these horrific events, we immediately considered what it meant for the timing of our film. Once inaccurate assumptions about the content and intent of the movie began to take hold, I supported the decision to move the film off its release date.”
The director insisted the film had been misunderstood and that it was supposed to show what happens when both sides of the political spectrum fail to listen or try to understand one another.
He said he did not think it took sides against conservatives.
"Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally,” Zobel told Variety.
“I wanted to make a fun, action thriller that satirized this moment in our culture — where we jump to assume we know someone’s beliefs because of which ‘team’ we think they’re on ... and then start shouting at them," he told Variety. “This rush to judgment is one of the most relevant problems of our time.”

What sort of person makes a movie that thinks it might be OK to pick a team based on politics and then hunt them down. The idea of assuming you understand a person’s political beliefs is also juvenile.
Political beliefs are arranged on a very long spectrum of issues. The notion that a person will always believe exactly what another person believes is nonsensical. Even the most important belief which will likely influence a person’s belief, such a belief in God or a Judeo-Christian outlook, will still see a rather wide interpretation of political beliefs.
Hunting down human beings in the USA because of a difference in politics is evil. The only way such a thing can be legitimate is if we are officially engaged in a civil war, and they are armed an engaged in a war with us.

Conservatives listen to Leftists constantly (we have no choice, and are bombarded by their message daily even if we don't watch the media) and we understand them quite well.
And we understand them.
Thing is, those in power understand us well too, even if they like to use the uninformed opinions of Sheeple and ignorant Leftist ideologues (who swallow their lines undigested and parrot it back) as cover for their knowledge of conservatives.
It is useful for them to plead ignorance of our views on this. They certainly can't come out and say we bear arms to prevent the tyranny of people like them. It is much better to paint us as ignorant, violent, sexist, homophobic rubes who are out of control and need to be reined in by compassionate people like them who are only concerned for the "common good".
It is no coincidence that most conservatives have a better grasp on, and value history more than Leftists do. We pay attention because we understand they tyrannical impulses they have and express in their actions are part and parcel of the black pit of human nature, have had to be defended against in the past, need constant attention in the present, and will require defense against in the future.
And it is also no coincidence that Leftists deride, discard, ignore, and deliberately twist history because they know history as we do, and recognize it as an impediment to their aims and goals.

That was my thought when I saw the trailer as well.
He should have let the movie speak for itself when it does get released rather than open his mouth and remove all doubt about what he stands for.

I am sure he wants to release his film but the Producers won’t allow it. It is not up to him. The executive producers and the studio make the call, not the director.
