President Donald Trump on Sunday emphasized a need for the country to focus on "a very big mental health problem" in the wake of two mass shootings in one weekend that left 32 people dead earlier this month as he appeared to defend current US gun control measures, stating "we do have a lot of background checks right now."
"It's the people that pull the trigger, not the gun that pulls the trigger so we have a very, very big mental health problem and Congress is working on various things and I will be looking at it," Trump told reporters on the tarmac before heading back to Washington after a vacation at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
The White House, Trump said, is "very much involved" in the discussions Congress is having to address gun violence and while "a lot of things are happening on the gun level" he said "the concept of mental institutions" must be addressed.
"These are people that have to be in institutions for help, I'm not talking about as a form of a prison, I'm saying for help and I think it's something we have to really look at, the whole concept of mental institutions," he said. "I remember growing up we had mental institutions, then they were closed -- in New York, I'm talking about -- they were, many of them closed. A lot of them were closed and all of those people were put out on the street."

Let me do a little MSM spin on this (Just like Whirled News Tonight).
Note that we have these mental health problems, and, Congress . . .
Congress is the Mental Problem!
I want to know how many of these ‘shooters’ were drugged in school.
Do not care about ‘privacy laws’ in the least, why do we not have this information?
Thinking a couple of years after their ‘teachers’ are done drugging these young men they are are all ‘off their meds’.
It is a crime for the government to hide this information from us.
Or is it just the drug lobby paying to keep this information from the public.
President Reagan’s biggest mistake (arguably) was allowing congress to put so many mentally ill people on the streets.
I predict that the DemoCraps will over-play their hand, like usual, and end up with nothing.
I don't understand the history of that...what happened exactly?
The fella in Philly broke six million gun laws...politicians now discussing gun laws
I predict that the DemoCraps will over-play their hand, like usual, and end up with nothing.

That’s the best case scenario.
Unfortunately I can’t give you a good answer. As best I can understand the democrat controlled congress thought it was unfair to keep non-violent mental patients locked up. The Reagan administration saw it as a chance to save money. So it was a done deal.
The kids may or may not have been drugged - actually, most of them probably received no care at all, because that would have been prejudicial and labeled them as mentally ill...which they obviously were, and to which all of their terrified classmates would no doubt testify...but the bizarre strategy of sealing juvenile records has prevented gun purchase checks or anything else from getting crucial information.
Sealing the records was supposed to benefit black kids, since they have a higher rate of disciplinary problems and the theory was that they might settle down later and their relatively minor juvenile records might impede their future progress. However, theres records and theres records. Somebody who mouthed off is not the same as somebody who wrote a death list of his fellow students on the bathroom wall.
Yes but democrats are telling the American people if you don’t pass gun control they are going to unleash more ... uh ... there will be more mass shootings of innocent Americans.
And it will be done by White Nationalist Trump supporters too, so better get on it!
Reagan single handedly emptied the mental institutions when he was governor of California. Congress had nothing to do with it. Reagan said it would be cheaper than housing the mentally ill to just treat them at outpatient clinics. Probably reagans worst mistake.
This guy runs Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, and sent this out.
Supports/answers what you are saying.
He says not guns, videos, mental illness, but Psycho drugs, esp for young kids (ADHD, etc.).

Every category of violent crime is down about 40% since 1993...don’t fall for the trauma based mind control propaganda

The ACLU sued the state when Reagan was Governor. So the state emptied the institutions and tried outpatient care. Which as we see has failed miserably.

I could be wrong but I think the court decision that enabled this was prior to RR.
President Trump is certainly right about “a very big mental health problem” For example when someone recommends as a technique running outside and firing two random blasts from a double barrel shotgun. They have a very big mental health problem. Maybe they are a little Slow. Like Slow Joe. I’m always very mindful of how many rounds of ammo I have on me. I wouldn’t want to be the next Reginald Denny. The Presidents campaign team needs to make a tv spot with Crazy Joe and the fact that he needs to be the first person RED FLAGGED.
“I predict that the DemoCraps will over-play their hand, like usual, and end up with nothing.”
That is exactly how I see it.
WRONG....THE national .CONGRESSIONAL BILL WAS UNDER KENNEDY.
Here is the hx of the emptying of State Mental Hosptals—so NO it wasnt’ a “MISTAKE “ Reagen made.
1)At the time, the “insane asylums”—state hospitals were like Cuckoo’ Nest and also increasingly expensive to maintain.
2) During the late 1950’s there were advancements of excellent psychiatric medications for schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorders...these being the illnesses most hospitalized in state hospitals.
3) the move was to move away from committing someone for years, espeicaly with no legal redress..often simply on a family members request. that led to he current Legal commitment of 72 hrs, with a legal review.
4) Initially local MH Centers in every community in the nation were 100% funded by the federal govt. and were able to keep people from the streets...then the feds reduced their payments and the states never picked up the difference.
ITS A NO BRAINER....FUND MENTAL HEALTH AND YU CAN KEEP THE MENTALLY ILL- SERIUSLY MENTALY ILL..In treatment and off the streets and monitored, or in a residential facility fr some time if needed.
all the hysteria about “ crazy people”—put them in hospials and lock them up....Guess what, we can’t afford it...its hilarious when people demand this and they wont even fund a lesser, very adequate mental heath treatment system.
btw-—weve locked up many, many mentally ill-—their in local jails or prisons.
Its not Reagen’s Biggest Mistake. Laughable.
