Buying Greenland isn't a good idea — it's a great idea

The reaction to President Trump's sudden interest in buying Greenland from Denmark has been mostly one of derision. And Denmark, which owns the territory, appears to oppose any sale.

But don't laugh — an American purchase of Greenland could represent an extraordinary deal in terms of America's national security, economic interests, and environmental protection.

As much as it might seem out of the blue, U.S. acquisition of Greenland is not at all a strange or irrational idea. Following Denmark's fall to Nazi Germany in 1940, American forces defended Greenland. The roots of American-Greenland comradeship are thus old and formal. In 1946, one Harry S. Truman even attempted to purchase Greenland for $100 million. Was Truman crazy? On the contrary, he was the president who ended a global war and set America on its ultimate course to defeat the Soviet Union.

Would definitely trade even for Puerto Rico.

Well, Denmark would again have a place in the sun. We bought the Virgin Islands from them in 1917.

They have a low debt to GDP ratio of 35%. Compare to the USA’s 77%

Highest Greenland summit is 12,000 feet......don't bet on submersion.

Also land mass doesn't “sink”.

Along with Puerto Rico, throw in Miami.

and throw in a round-trip ticket to say, Sarasota...

Could help with the immigration crisis too. “The good news is, you will be allowed in to the USA. The bad news is, your ship leaves tomorrow for Greenland”.

Does not matter what any American thinks. Neither Denmark nor Greenland are interested. That makes it a “great” but unworkable idea. So why keep making new editorials about how great the idea is. That’s a waste of time.

That’s called war. I think we got enough problems without invading Europe.

That’s a lot of words to still be buying a country, which doesn’t happen anymore.

As much I’d love to buy Greenland from Denmark the only it might be made available is if they get rid of it just prior to their transition to Islamic government (which should be in about 20 years for them, based on their demographics).

Before that, not a chance - countries just don’t do those kinds of land sales anymore.

Isn’t most of the land sinking, or due to be covered in water soon?...

Maybe you are referring to it tipping over. A distinct possibility, with all the population concentrated on shoreline communities.

You know what, your ‘crazy’ idea isn’t so crazy, and Trump is such an out side the box guy I’ll bet he’ll make such an offer too.

It’s a fantastic idea. Except if you lived in Greenland, would you really want to be rolled up enter current American culture? Current American government?

I would bet the local population be 99% opposed

Denmark spends 3.4 billion Euros year to support Greenland (I read).

Not sure what they get in return...

CAN THE RESIDENCE OF GREENLAND VOTE TO BECOME A STATE?

Mmmmaaaaayyyyybeee

The Northwest Ordinances decided to make territories wait until they had 60,000 residents before making them states.

Greenland has 55,000. Exceptions have been made, and other workarounds have succeeded.

Congress still must approve admission.

It’s a shit idea. We have enough BS problems already with the communists in govt, the enviro whackos, weirdos on the streets, idiots in all phases of daily life, so we need to take on more? BULLSHIT, I SAY.
