President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.
The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the discussions, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
U.S. officials view Greenland as important to American national-security interests. A decades-old defense treaty between Denmark and the U.S. gives the U.S. military virtually unlimited rights in Greenland at America’s northernmost base, Thule Air Base. Located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it includes a radar station that is part of a U.S. ballistic missile early-warning system. The base is also used by the U.S. Air Force Space Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The U.S. has sought to derail Chinese efforts to gain an economic foothold in Greenland. The Pentagon worked successfully in 2018 to block China from financing three airports on the island.

Greenland is costing Denmark about 500 million dollars a year and it is becoming very hard for them to find the money. Do a deal, cover the costs including defense, set up a duty free zone covering the entire island and split the profits from any mineral rights, extensive RE deposits.... DONE DEAL!

We do not need to doubt POTUS’ marketing abilities, which translate easily to the political.
This is likely at the ‘seriously mulling it over stage’. There are national defense considerations. There are foreign policy considerations and there are macro-economic considerations.
But, it is quite efficient to also use such considerations to one’s own ends.

Factor in the Space Force. Thule Airbase is HQ of the US Space Command. We’ve already thwarted the Chinese over purchase of 3 airports. (Why does Greenland need 3 airports? And why would China want them?) The US Airforce has been authorized there in a defense capacity for 78 years.
Unlike the Norse Vikings, we have technology and logistics, plus force, to remain & thrive on Greenland as long as we wish. We not only must pay something to Denmark for the airbase/weather stations/associated infrastructure, after all this time we must be an integrated part of the infrastructure and economy.
What do the Danes/Greenlanders lose if America leaves or is ejected?
