A year after telling the public as a candidate he had obtained a bachelor’s degree, Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes said Thursday he hasn’t completed his degree at Alabama A&M University.
The Democrat revealed to the Isthmus newspaper that he completed coursework to resolve an incomplete class but never turned it in. He called it “a small technical thing.”
Barnes’ biography on Gov. Tony Evers’ website doesn’t claim that he graduated. Instead, it describes him as an alumnus, which may be someone who only attended a school.
However, in response to a Wisconsin State Journal candidate questionnaire last year when he was running in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor, his campaign stated he had a “BA in Broadcast Journalism—Alabama A&M University.” A BA is a bachelor of arts degree.
Barnes, a former Milwaukee legislator, won the primary with 68% of the vote against Sheboygan businessman Kurt Kober.
Barnes spokesman Earl Arms said Thursday the questionnaire response was an error made by a former campaign staffer.
“The lieutenant governor regrets that oversight and is working to address any misconceptions that have come from it,” Arms said. “Lt. Gov. Barnes has always been transparent when asked about his graduation status. From his time as a state representative through now, Lt. Gov. Barnes has stated that he attended Alabama A&M, not graduated.”
Barnes also told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel twice in a November interview that he “finished” college, and the paper reported he had graduated. Arms didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment on that remark.
According to Isthmus, Barnes volunteered the information that he hadn’t yet obtained a degree, and told the newspaper he is working with Alabama A&M to finish requirements to graduate.
Alabama A&M spokesman Jerome Saintjones confirmed in an email to The Associated Press that Barnes was a student at the school from the fall of 2003 through the spring of 2008 but did not graduate. He said Barnes is still working with the university to resolve the incomplete coursework.
Keep your eyes on this guy. He is the Wisconsin version of 0bama.

I ain’t never been to no college but I now identify as a PhD.
Fortunately, there is no “qualification” to be a democrat Lt Governor.
Well, other than the usual: approved minority, approved sex, or approved religion.
If Obama can cover up his college records, why can’t Mandela?
I dream of the day where we start looking at a person’s character, integrity, wisdom and experience to fill positions of power and influence instead of going for the bottom of the barrel.

There. Is more to this story I’m guessing. He probably had a police citation which froze his academic account. He probably needs to take some required mini class associated with the citation to unfreeze his student account. He will never graduate is my guess.
Pretty much any degree from Al A&M is a joke. I attended one of their graduations and probably 90% of the graduates had over a 3.0.
In 1973, an A&M graduate in my Army class couldn’t pass a test on basic electrical engineering. Nothing more complicated than E=IxR. Stuff you would master in the first four weeks of the first EE class in college. He had a EE degree from A&M.
I actually DO have a PhD. Public highschool Diploma.

I used to work with one of them, though from Howard rather than Alabama A&M.
Absolutely useless as an engineer.
This would remind Texans of Lens Guerrero who was a fast riser in Democrat circles back in 1990s when Ann Richards was governor. Guerrero even gave a commencement address about how wonderful she felt about walking across the stage with her college diploma.
It turned out to be untrue. She was a few credits short of earning her degree and it unraveled her entire political career. Let’s hope Wisconsinites are as smart as Texans.

Yes, he failed the test twice. The sad thing was the Army decided that he should be graduated since that occupational specialty did not have enough minorities.
