Springfield Walmart Open Carry of Rifle Becomes Panic Driven by Media Contagion
Ammoland ^ | 11 August, 2019 | Dean Weingarten

Posted on 08/13/2019 2:29:56 AM PDT by marktwain

At about 4:10 p.m. on 8 August 2019, Dmitriy Andreychenco walked into the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Springfield, Missouri. He had a slung AR-type rifle and was wearing a T-shirt and tactical vest. He obtained a shopping cart and was videoing himself on a cell phone while pushing the cart through the store. He did not threaten anyone, point the rifle at anyone, or make any threats that are known at this time.

A manager at the store pulled the store alarm, causing a panic while customers evacuated the store. Dmitriy evacuated with the other customers. As he left the store, a firefighter with a concealed carry permit, who was armed, drew his pistol and held Dmitriy for police. In the video from outside the store, you can see that Dmitri was calmly complying with police orders. Look at his black t-shirt. I do not see any evidence of body armor being worn.

He is wearing some sort of web gear, which it appears, the media denoted as “body armor.” Identification of web gear as body armor has been common in the media.

Open carry is legal in Missouri. It has been hard fought for. Opponents of an armed population have worked hard to characterize open carry as threatening. The last few days of a media blitz on the rampage murders in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, have put the country on edge. The message has been that every young white male is a deadly threat. The manager at Walmart seems to have bought into the message.

From a column I read on this a few days ago:

“Anyone who is exercising their Second Amendment rights on the basis of MUAH RAHTS!!!!!!” and in such a way that the actual and reasonably foreseeable effect is to undermine generalized political support for the Second Amendment is no genuine friend of the Second Amendment. They are, rather, engaged in self-serving, attention-grabbing behavior that is detrimental to the Second Amendment. They are no ally of the Second Amendment, and no friend of mine.” - FReeper Artemis Webb

I walked into the local WalMart (in Mo. I might add) CCW, directly in front of me was a guy with a USMC hat open carrying on his hip. I never saw anyone even look twice at him.

“Had I seen this young man walking in to my local Walmart, I might have shot him dead.”

Sobering thoughts. Don't see enough provocation in reports of what could be known at the time.

“Don’t see enough provocation in reports of what could be known at the time. “

In my state there is no open carry. What he was doing would likely have led to an armed confrontation with local responders. In any case, given the recent shooting, why was he taking this risk? This reminds me of several incidents where middle eastern guys acted like terrorist’s in airports to provoke a reaction. They got it and then they sued. This guy was provoking a reaction. Once the reaction started he would have no control over how far the reaction got. I suspect a number of cops would have shot him if it was there call. What he did was stupid in the extreme.

If someone wants their rights curtailed by law, what better way to do it than to abuse those rights and frighten people? My impression is our entire society is on a knife’s edge waiting for the shooting to start. I must see references to civil war several times a week. It’s time for cooler heads to prevail and ratchet down the rhetoric and the foolish challenges.

Agreed. You’re not helping if you are scaring people. Instead, hand out flyers inviting people to come to a range and shoot some guns. Hell, even Chuck Schumer smiles like a moron when shooting a gun.

Respecting their opinions and needs does not mean you control their feelings.

Many people will be offended by the exercise of Second Amendment rights, no matter how you do it.

They are a minority, but they are real.

So, wouldn’t it be better to carry a concealed weapon into Walmart rather than what that idiot did? Body armor, an AR-15 variant, making videos of himself as he progressed through the store. That is not an exercise of his 2nd rights, but rather a mild case of terrorism.

It might be better if you are not wishing to promote the Second Amendment.

He may have exercised bad judgement.

Carrying a firearm concealed supports the Second Amendment, but it also says the carrier is ashamed or afraid of carrying openly.

Opponents of the Second Amendment dislike open carriers more than they dislike concealed carriers, because open carry proudly proclaims support of the Second Amendment.

It is an individual choice.

The Supreme Court has implied that open carry may be protected, while concealed carry may not be. That is what the Ninth Circuit has ruled.

Did that guy in the video suffer a traumatic brain injury? Why is he afraid of a guy carrying a rifle around? He had some of the best training in the world - some schlub carrying a rifle shouldn’t be a threat to him.

Re #92:

First of all I didn’t say it. It’s a quote from this commentary; https://lawofselfdefense.com/understanding-legalities-of-walmart-rifle-body-armor-event/
But I do agree with the author. As best I can understand Dmitriy Andreychenko was trying to make a point. While I am not sure exactly what the point was ( The AR platform is great? Open carry is awesome? Not everyone who carries wants to slaughter the masses?) I would probably agree with it. He obviously wasn’t trying to kill anybody.

But he was tone deaf in his timing and any reasonable person should know, coming on the heels of the El Paso shootings that a performance such as his was going to start a panic. What I’m saying (paraphrasing the author) is that Andreychenko didn’t do anything to help the cause of gun rights. However, and I didn’t say this yet, the retired firefighter who pulled his own weapon on Andreychenko provided a nice counterpoint as a responsible and effective gun carrier.

“What would be the reaction of any armed FReeper saw him walking in if this had happened in an Open Carry State?”

I would take cover and watch him. The instant he fired or raised his rifle to take aim, I would drop him.

My first reaction is this guy is either a complete tone-deaf moron, or an Antifa-type personality trying to drum up fear and generate more demand for gun control.

The word needs to get out, gun owners need to be carrying concealed in urban environments and NOT trying to make any grandiose statements. It is NOT normal to walk into a Walmart wearing an semi-auto and tactical gear! That is gear for use in the appropriate environment!

Who had some of the best training around? The former fireman? I’ve paid very little attention to the story as the kid, moron that he is, didn’t break any laws that I can think of.

As for drawing down on the moron, I get it. It’s his right. It’s an open carry state. He didn’t point his weapon at anyone. I get all of that. But, given the events of the past week, one, no matter how much of a moron, should have some sense to realize that his actions might be interpreted differently. That’s just me. My 2cents.

Personally, as someone who pretty much carries a gun every day, I abhor open carry. I will never be able to understand why anyone wants to draw that much attention to themselves. I see lots of guys walking around, doing it, doesn’t make me scared, just think that some should be mindful that not everyone looks at guns the same way. And that has nothing to do with the 2A or any concealed carry laws, in the US.

I am an idiot for exercising my rights? Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. You are probably more the latter. Use your freedoms or lose it. And, by the way, I know I have demonstrated my ability to act under extreme duress during my career in the Service. A profiler you are not. You are probably such a coward you are afraid to wear a MAGA hat in public.

Carrying a firearm concealed supports the Second Amendment, but it also says the carrier is ashamed or afraid of carrying openly.

I strongly disagree.

In any situation involving a mass shooting by a criminal or terrorist, the first one that he will target is someone openly carrying a firearm. Carrying a concealed firearm says that the carrier wants to be able to take out a shooter before the shooter knows that he is armed.

Concealed carry also protects those who are not carrying. Where concealed carry is permitted and encouraged, criminals and terrorists have no way to tell if anyone is carrying or not. As a general rule, if you intend to commit a crime or a terrorist act with a firearm, you are not going to choose a location where your intended victims may be able to fire back. This is why mass shooters almost always target so called "gun free zones."
