The uncle of an infant who lost both parents in the Saturday mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, that killed more than 20 people defended a photo the president took with the child while giving a thumbs up, The Washington Post reported.
Trump traveled to El Paso on Wednesday to meet with first responders, hospital workers and victims of the shootings.
Tito Anchondo, whose brother and sister-in-law were killed in the attack, chose to take his orphaned nephew to meet the president and first lady. The 2-month-old boy suffered two broken fingers, but he survived the shooting after his parents shielded him.
Anchondo told The Washington Post he wanted to take the boy to meet the president and tell him about his family.
“He was just there as a human being, consoling us and giving his condolences,” Anchondo said of Trump.
Anchondo said Trump “wasn’t there to be pushing any kind of political agenda,” calling the meeting “a private conversation between human beings.”
First lady Melania Trump tweeted photos Thursday of her and the president’s trip to Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso after the shootings over the weekend in both cities.
In one picture, the first lady is holding the baby while Trump stands next to her showing a thumbs up. They are joined by Anchondo and his sister, Deborah Ontiveros.

Much has been made of the “thumbs up,” insisting that it was inappropriate considering this baby’s tragic circumstances. What would such critics prefer? A thumbs down?
Everyone knows that this baby was just dealt a very bad hand, but the relatives are caring for the baby and doing the right thing. What’s wrong with giving them all a thumbs up? Heck, if someone posted a photo of the baby and the relatives on facebook or instagram, I guarantee that hundreds if not thousands of people would give them a virtual “thumbs up.” What’s so bad about the President doing it in person?

I totally agree. We have not seen such despicable behavior in our lifetimes. If what we are seeing and hearing is not demonic, then I do not understand what demonic is. Gives us a glimpse of what is inside people when there is no fear of consequences. There will be consequences at some point, but this Godless and probably drugged-out bunch think they can get away with everything. May God protect our President, his family, others in government who are not a part of this, and the mostly good people in our country, both Democrat and Republican, for the ilk out there right now threatening and intimidating people are not who most folks are.
