Jeffrey Epstein, the multimillionaire who had recently been indicted on charges of sex trafficking, has been found dead of an apparent suicide in his jail cell. According to a statement from the Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Prisons, “Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell in the Special Housing Unit from an apparent suicide at the Metropolitan Correctional Center” in New York City at 6:30 a.m.
The Associated Press reported that “Fire officials received a call at 6:39 a.m. Saturday that Epstein was in cardiac arrest, and he was pronounced dead at New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan Hospital.”
The FBI is now investigating the incident.
Jerry Dunleavy, a reporter at the Washington Examiner, spoke by phone with the Spokesperson for NYC’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner, who told him: “We are investigating the cause of death and we have an open case. There is no official cause of death yet—the medical examiner has to do their job.”
The immediate question is how it was possible for a man supposedly under suicide watch, to take his own life—particularly as there had already been one potentially life-threatening event. On July 24, 2019, it was reported that Epstein had been found on the floor of his cell, “semi-conscious, despondent and crying with slight bruising around his neck.”
At the time, CBS News reported that a “source said it was not clear whether his injuries were self-inflicted, but that Epstein was put on suicide watch at the correctional facility as a precautionary measure.”

I believe Jeffrey Epstein, being of no further use to his creators, is dead as a door nail. And the multiple stories. - hanged in his cell, dead in bed, etc - are typical in events of this nature when people who are not on the inside are yapping and trying to appear important.
The Chief Medical Examiner of New York county has always been an elite professional. With DeBlasio of course anything is possible but his only interest in appointments appears to be moving cash to his grifter wife, most of the professionals are still top notch.
There will not be an autopsy result for at least 3 weeks. This is normal, CSI is fiction. If there is a Provisional Anatomical Diagnosis on Monday (stabbed in the heart, broken neck) you will probably hear about it, but if there is no PAD it will be a while before there is any news.

I have not heard yet who the medical examiner will be. Since Epstein was in federal custody inside a federal institution, the jurisdiction could be federal, though I can see where the state has an interest. JFK’s assassination showed how this issue was not really thought out too well back then.

The handling of the JFK case with regard to the autopsy was very (very) unusual.
The body “belonged” to the Dallas County ME. The body was taken away by the Secret Service with some pushing and shoving involved. The decision to go to Bethesda and turn the case over to the Navy was not made until AF One was airborne.
Epstein’s body is in the possession of the ME of New York County. They will not be giving it up. If it is taken by force, it will be a huge news story.
The one way around this is the religious angle. When I worked in NYC, the ME would usually defer to Orthodox Jewish refusal of autopsy and would release bodies to meet the 24 hour burial custom.
I do not believe putting forward the idea that Epstein was a practicing Jew, never mind an Orthodox one, would fly at this point, but you never know.
There was another thread where someone who had detailed knowledge of the layout in that jail said it would be impossible for an inmate like Epstein to hang himself. Ceiling nine feet high, bed sheets are basically paper and would fall apart under the weight of a grown man, no belt, etc.
Physically impossible to hang one’s self. The drive by’s are already concluding it was a suicide but they provide no other details. The case will fall off the radar in a couple days. Time to move on to more important business, like bashing the president.
