Ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf have reported unusual GPS interference, among other problems, and the US believes Iran is to blame.
The Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration issued a warning on Wednesday highlighting threats to commercial vessels posed by Iran. The warning revealed that ships have had a variety of issues when operating in the region, including "spoofed bridge-to-bridge communications from unknown entities falsely claiming to be US or coalition warships."

US defense official told CNN that Iran has GPS jammers operating on Abu Musa Island, an island in the Persian Gulf located near the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the aim is apparently to cause ships and aircraft to inadvertently wander into Iranian waters or airspace, thus justifying a seizure.

we’ve been jamming radio signals since right after our military advisories started using radios
Ships have several RADAR systems onboard. There is no reason to be off course in confined waters!
It’s Boomer time.
Simple solution. Line up one behind the other just like everyone did in Kindergarten. Of course, many ship captains’ egos will get in the way.
Your statement is true. I don’t know the present day merchant marine typical operations, but I was under the impression that, at least in open ocean, many of the merchant vessels were on auto pilot presumably tied to GPS for steering. But it would seem irresponsible to rely on it in congested or restricted waters. These merchant ships are minimally manned so I suppose its possible they don’t have the full nav team on the bridge, but again, my personal experience of this is very dated.
If the Iranians are spoofing/jamming, chances are they are getting such toys from their Russian friends as the Russians have been known for using similar techniques at various times.
Interesting.
Is a Growler a Navy electronic warfare plane with signal cancelling capabilities? or, is it a ship borne device like the one I believed brought down an iranian drone?
I was thinking that too, they should agree on some sort of common traffic protocol through there. It would definitely be in their best interests considering the situation.
This is very plausible. In 2016 the U.S Military jammed gps signals over 500 square miles around White Sands for a training exercise. I remember the NOTAM to pilots warning of the gps outage in the area.
ping!
As a former tin can line officer, I can tell you most people have no idea of the shenanigans going on in the Persian Gulf
on BOTH sides...
I agree....special ops....but total secret.
I sure we have anti-jamming capabilities....so I think this is just propaganda.
And that's how GPS jammers work. You can buy them in the U.S. but they are extremely illegal to use.
It’s not “us” they are talking about. The Iranians are grabbing common international tankers that do not have military electronic defense capabilities.
What do you mean “we”? This is being done to ships from different countries.
With some electronic knowledge you can make them yourself with the right parts which are readily available.
If I were Oman, Id smell opportunity. Build a canal to bypass the straight and charge a nice toll.
Russian military has just been given access to Iran's ports in Bandar-e-Bushehr and Chabahar...so the likelihood they're getting help from Moscow is pretty high.
I wondered about that myself, but that might give Iran the confidence that their power over the strait was indeed successful. They would see it and consider it as a huge victory.
