The mass shooter in Dayton, Ohio who was killed by police early Sunday after he shot nine people to death and wounded more than a dozen fit the now-familiar profile of the troubled youth with a well-documented history of threats dating back to high school.
The Dayton gunman had a "kill list" and had interacted with law enforcement as a minor, authorities said.
Similarly, the man charged with killing 17 people and wounding 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last year was also well known to high school counselors and local police before he turned 18, police said.
DAYTON SHOOTER WAS 'EXPLORING VIOLENT IDEOLOGIES,' INVESTIGATORS SAY
They are not alone. The pattern of mass shooters whose violent rhetoric began as minors is not new. But once these kids reach that magical age of 18, no background check will detect the red flags that signal the potential for violence.
The time has come to change the way we deal with the records of troubled juveniles once they legally become adults. No longer should we simply expunge information symptomatic of violence that may be yet to come.

Stop erasing criminal records of juveniles prone to drugs and counter-culture.
Get rid of the welfare state.
Turned out one of the Arkansas school shooters of 20 years ago ended up living fairly close to methe one who was killed in a car accident a couple of weeks ago. He and his fellow murderer were tried as juveniles, released at age 21 with their records sealed and their names changed.
To quote Dickens, “The law is a ass”.
It would mmake a difference if they stopped making violent movies, and bring back the value of life by changing abortion rights .. killing them at birth is murder and everyone knows it’s murder.
But the only thing on the mind of the left is “gun control”. ... really dumb heads out there.
Looking back, things that have changed : fatherless homes, kids on their own before they should be, disrespect, no accountability, too much and no thanks,
and the rude behaviour that has run amuck since obama was on his throne.
Sounds like one of many reason we should throw back in liberal face. Libs being extremely soft on crime. Your incident, plus Parkland where everybody ignored or covered up the shooters mental issues. Or the guy in Dayton with a hit list posted in the BR or the other rape list. Reported to police and ignored. Or his BF had a gun pointed at his head by him, yet what did he do? He ghosted him.
what more do we need?.....
and, they also are not supposed to stab or choke or beat other people as well...
100%. This information needs to remain available for government check, even if removed from their record for jobs and civilian background. There is a real problem with 16-25 years olds committing massive crimes and its totally predictable. They get a clean record and any sign of trouble is erased. The threat does not.
The problem is, other than being “known by police” he didn’t seem to do anything that got him into any real trouble. Take it from me that you can be “known by police” for just being a mouthy neighborhood kid.
My wife worked 10 years in the Texas juvenile justice system, and there are some REAL juvenile killers out there. But, they usually find their way into the juvenile justice system at an early age through some violent crime like rape or assault. But, my wife will tell you straight up that they ALL have one thing in common: They were “high” when they committed the crime, and they ALL smoke pot. So, don’t believe the story that pot isn’t a gateway drug. It most definitely is.
Publish the names of the little f-ers, instead of hiding them, and pretending they don’t exist.
Dickens was right about that, but as far as his personal life...he was an ass.
Serious juvenile offenses need to be incorporated into NICS and state-specific background check systems.
If this gets a serious hearing in congress, leftists will oppose it.
It is the one proposal that would have actually made a difference in recent problems.
This is a good idea. But it may not work that well because many states are passing laws that prohibit employers from asking about a criminal record until a job offer has been made. The EEOC & courts would likely say juvenile convictions are not a valid basis to rescind a job offer.
When I was in high school (don’t ask how many decades ago) many of us had figured how to game the system and do things that would fall just short of being charged as an adult, knowing that on the 18th birthday it would all disappear.
The medical records are sealed and not available for background information.
The system is rigged against justice and in favor of the corrupt elites who rule us for only their benefit. This is an excellent point by Jason. We need transparency not sealed records.
Start treating juveniles as adults AND charge their parents with the same crime as the juveniles.
Until it hurts, nothing will change.
One of my Leftists friends posited on Facebook, that it has been proven that mental illness in not the reason for mass murderers. I do not comment on anything political on Facebook, but wonder if anyone has seen any evidence of this claim? Is there any study that suggests this? I do believe it is a mental illness problem. And I am not deterred by this friend (and ALL his Leftist friends who agree with him).
